Here’s a fella speaking a lot of sense. Maybe the concern is, if everyone were to do this, there would be complete chaos. But I don’t think so. I think the opposite would be the case Getting this right puts a lot of emphasis on strong leadership. Providing direction and support to a team can be perceived to be easier if everyone is the same - i.e. fewer outliers to worry about. But this won’t take you very far. You’ll be herding sheep. And sheep who are not fulfilled, not motivated, cos they are expected to be monochrome. If we encourage everyone on the team to contribute in a way which is authentic, it might take more management effort, but the business capability will sky-rocket. I’ve noticed people listen to you when you are authentic. People follow you when you are authentic. People around you become more authentic, when you are authentic. This is the Power of Authenticity. (And Paul Thomas – love the shirt! That’s a statement of authenticity if ever there was one!) www.johnstapleton.eu

Abso..flippin..lutely John Stapleton. And how coincidental that I've just spent the morning with our UK & Europe team, colleagues from Asia and our Global OD Lead from the US talking on exactly this. The strength and power of being able to bring your true authentic self to work is immeasurable. If you have the permission and power to unleash your true self at work, then imagine the impact that has on you, your colleagues, your team, the whole enterprise and then clients; and therefore the "wealth" of and for all.

I agree. It's demotivating to have a leader who can only see one solution, their own solution and selling style, for example, and who wants to clone you. I understand the need for a clear vision, but I think this should be the outcome, preferably. The task/journey should be planned together using all an individual's skills, and the Leader/manager and individual should agree on the plan together; this will achieve ownership/buy-in from the team and individual. Far too often, I hear the manager say, "This is what I do" or "Just say this." They expect the team members to read the script unquestioningly and robotically and follow a process that suits the manager's style and preferences. They have yet to allow for the individual's learning styles or skill sets. You often find the team risks short tenure from the staff.

I love this message John Stapleton - it resonates deeply. Also love Paul Thomas' shirt :) I once left a job after many years and one of the Board directors came to speak to me after I'd handed in my notice. She was quite bitter about my upcoming departure and - despite many years of good service - said: "You're clearly not a [insert company name] person then". In her venomous attempt to deliver what she thought would be a heavy blow, after many years of dedicated service, she had unwittingly spoken a truth... our values simply weren't aligned not least because I authentically chose to live mine.

Love this truth and the big fella Paul Thomas too! #authenticity My dear and now long passed grand mother wrote the same message on all birthday cards, Christmas cards and special notes, “to thine self be true”. She would be proud to know of the impact that had on me. My darkest career day was similarly, when i was instructed/ordered by an executive general manager of The Clorox Company to put “phil james” away and to simply “toe the line”. So I chose to toe my own line and shortly after, founded iNRV8 Specialist Agency: Brand & Innovation Concepts

Thanks for the shout out John. 100% agree, authenticity is king. As well as authentic leadership - a lot of people seem to think that being authentic and vulnerable is a weakness as a leader. Quite the opposite.
