Water is critical to the mining industry. Without water, mines don’t function. However, water must be managed appropriately as it's also one of the primary drivers of slope failures and slope instability. In his latest article, CM&G Director Tim Cartledge examines why groundwater and surface water management is imperative to the geotechnical performance of a mine site. From understanding the nature of water on site to implementing the right solution, he shares that with some planning and forethought, managing water can be done effectively. Yesterday on Capitol Hill, Trout Unlimited President and CEO Chris Wood testified in the Public Lands, Forests, and Mining Subcommittee about two pieces of mining legislation. Despite differing opinions, there was bipartisan praise expressed for Good Samaritan legislation to fix liability hurdles preventing organizations and agencies from cleaning up abandoned hardrock mines. An analysis conducted by TU found that approximately 110,000 miles of streams – enough to circle the Earth four times – are listed as impaired for heavy metals or acidity, and abandoned mines are a major source of these impairments. Of these impaired stream miles, 20% are in areas that contain native trout and salmon while 52 percent are in areas that are important drinking water sources. “These issues are acute and they’re often in indigenous communities,” Wood explained. “But these are tractable issues. We know how to clean these things up… We’re talking piles of rock that were left and are leaching acid mine drainage into rivers and streams. It’s totally fixable.” Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eNAd_7aB

Have you considered using Amber Floodlighting on Your Mining Equipment? We recently partnered with a coal mine in Wyoming to test amber and standard white LED floodlights, and the insights are fascinating! Amber fixtures are ideal in conditions such as: - Fog - Snow - Dust - Rain Amber floodlights excel in these scenarios because they are less reflective than white or blue lights. With longer wavelengths, amber lighting penetrates airborne particles more efficiently, while white or blue lights, with shorter wavelengths, cause more refraction and glare in fog, snow, dust, and rain. Most mining equipment comes with standard 5000K (white) floodlights, which perform well in normal conditions. However, in high dust, fog, and other challenging weather conditions, amber lights can significantly improve visibility and help operators maintain efficiency. I would love to hear your feedback if this is something your ae using on site! Interested in exploring LED floodlighting options for your equipment? Shoot me a message! #Mining #LEDLighting #AmberLights #SafetyFirst #Efficiency #PhoenixLighting

Rock Salt Testing Sandberg can undertake the testing of salt for spreading on highways for winter maintenance using the methods given in British Standard BS 3247:2011+A1:2016. Sandberg holds a UKAS accreditation to undertake salt analysis. There are three main types of salt used for winter road maintenance: - Rock salt - derived by mining natural salt beds. - Vacuum salt - prepared by the evaporation under vacuum of brine. - Marine salt - derived by solar evaporation of seawater. All salt types work by depressing the freezing point of water. The particle size distribution of the salt is also an important factor as this will govern the spread of the salt from the height of the salt distribution. Be careful out there, there is a severe thunderstorm watch today for most of the Central Interior of BC. In the July 18th newsletter: exploration program and diamond drilling updates in BC and the YT, with some core photos of quartz veins. Did you know that Nicola Mining's Merritt Mill is the only facility in the Province of British Columbia permitted to accept third-party gold and silver mill feed from throughout the province? - More in their news release. Some info not included: Yukon Government provided a technical briefing on in-valley heap leach failure at Victoria Gold's Eagle Gold Mine, Mayo, YT, Na-Cho Nyäk Dun - relevant links in comments - no new samples off-site are reporting cyanide - daily sample collection is implemented (was every 2 days) - on-site contaminated water storage and filtering are being upgraded by the company - Na-Cho Nyäk Dun calls for more information, transparency, and a pause on all mining activity in their Territory to ensure that the necessary checks and balances are in place to protect these lands and waters, wildlife and people. - in response, Yukon.ca is setting up a website for updates to the public, after government consultation with Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, CoreGeo is hired as an independent consultant, and a review is being implemented of all rights and obligations under Canadian and Territorial law. The newsletter link is in the comments! #BritishColumbia #Yukon #MineralExploration #Mining #NewsReleases
