The temptation to present information in a way that aligns with a preferable story rather than an honest portrayal of reality is something most of us are familiar with. This phenomenon can occur when motivations and human tendencies lead us to interpret and communicate our findings through an overly positive lens. - financial pressures - inherent psychological biases - and the desire to showcase progress and expertise can all contribute to this distortion. —- Many approaches to AI safety rely on organisations' ability to - reason objectively - adapt to new information - think clearly in high-stress situations - and resist the pull of competing motivations. However, if decision-making processes are influenced by biased interpretations and embellished narratives the foundations of these safety measures become compromised. We have seen cases where technical accomplishments are presented in a way that may imply broader capabilities or understanding than what actually exists.
