In the vast ocean of leadership, Values are the stars that guide us, The compass that never lies. 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 isn't just about wielding authority; it's about embodying a set of core values that serve as a moral compass, guiding teams through even the most turbulent waters. Recently, after conducting my last change of command ceremony, an officer I had mentored gifted me a sextant – an navigational tool first used in the days of sail, that relies on fixed celestial objects to chart a course. The accompanying note perfectly encapsulated the essence of leadership I had strived to embody. Under my leadership, this officer found clarity amidst chaos, a steady hand to follow when confronted with "unknown territory." Effective leadership isn't about having all the answers; it's about 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 to navigate challenges collaboratively. It's about being the fixed point they can rely on, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. As I transition into this new chapter, I carry the lessons learned from my naval career, determined to continue charting a 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. What does it mean to be action-oriented? Having an action orientation means that you are “willing or likely to take practical action to deal with a problem or situation.” And while we like to believe that this requires constant forward motion, the reality of action is far different. Every situation requires that we evaluate our possibilities and choose the best one. Sometimes this possibilities will require us to move laterally or even backwards to get to a better place. In the military, that’s called “improving your position.” Life is about always improving your position. Can vs Can’t One of my favorite leadership books is “It’s Your Ship” by Michael Abrashoff. He takes one the worst recruited naval ships and turns it into one of the most recruited. He did this through focusing on what he COULD do instead of what he couldn’t. What a great thing for all of us!  You will thrive when your mindset is focused on all the possibilities that you can do.  Maybe you can’t run a marathon today but you can jog ¼ mile.  Maybe you can’t hire a new person but you can shift and align your work differently (or work with a coach!). Many of the things we can’t do are things we just don’t want to do badly enough. Challenge:  Imagine how you would like your life to be different in 6 months. What CAN you do to make that happen?  Start today! The second one is Impact on Visitors.  Inviting visitors into your business can leave a profound impression, just as it did in my Navy days. I recall a particular instance where we welcomed a family on board for a tour.     Five years later, we learned that the young son, inspired by that visit, decided to join the Navy. This demonstrates the far-reaching influence of a single visit.     Reflect on your business.
