For those who have not participated in the scramble, this is a very fun event, not to be missed. As I stated in a previous post where Greg Norman won £70,000 for his victory at Trump Turnberry in The Open 1986 - The winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A can spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGAs. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self-fund (LIV Golf, Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. According to the American Golf Industry Coalition's latest Golf Impact Report, golf impacts nearly two million Americans whose livelihoods directly or indirectly depend on it. The total economic impact of golf in America is estimated at $102 billion, serving 45 million golfers (11% of the U.S. population) and impacts 1.65 million jobs across the country. We spent last week at our Nation's Capital telling this story to congressional leaders and policy-makers as part of the 16th Annual National Golf Day. 'It's like our Olympics': How the US Women's Open is expected to impact Lancaster County's economy The USGA expects to spend $29 million to produce the U.S. Women’s Golf Open next week at Lancaster Country Club in Manheim Township, a four-day event that is estimated to inject $25 million to $35 million into the Lancaster County economy. That immediate impact will largely come from the spending that the golf association has done locally over months of preparation and the 100,000 mostly day-trip visitors it is predicted to attract. In 2015, the Open drew about 134,000 spectators to Lancaster Country Club, a record-breaking attendance for the Women’s Open at the time. “They're building a major city here,” said Jerry Hostetter, general chairman of the championship who helped bring it to the historic Lancaster Country Club, noting the tents, generators, catering, and restroom facilities needed to pull off one of professional golf’s most important championships. The USGA projected the event would directly add about 431 jobs and generate about $852,236 in local taxes and about $1.168 million in state taxes. There’s no independent study of the local economic impact but the USGA gave an estimated impact when it applied for a state Sports Marketing and Tourism Account Program grant. How to get a tee time at St Andrews? There are a few ways of getting a tee time on the Old Course at St Andrews: Option 1: Purchasing a guaranteed time. Select tour operators offer guaranteed tee times one-to-two years prior to play. These guaranteed tee times are generally more expensive than those obtained through the Application process described below, through the Ballot or by Standing-By, also described below. Option 2: Apply through the annual lottery in late-August of the year prior to play. The key is to start your planning early and to have your group names known by July / August. Results of the lottery are announced toward the end of October. This is a guaranteed tee time; however, St Andrews receives many more applications than they have available tee times. Option 3: A Tee Time by Ballot or Stand-by. This option is known as the “ballot.” It is essentially a lottery that takes place daily for play two days ahead. While there is no guarantee of success, chances are quite reasonable, especially if you are to be in the St Andrews area for four or five days. We would enter your names into the ballot each day except Friday as the course is closed on Sundays and do it in such a way as to avoid conflict with tee times on other courses. Option 4: It is possible to walk-on to the Old Course. You can advise the starter that you wish to do so, and he’ll try and fit you in if and when an opportunity arises. Chances of getting on depend on the time of year and how early you arrive at the starter’s box.
