Recommend an excellent, recently published book "Desirable Difficulties in Action": https://lnkd.in/esmgNdyd by Isaac Moore and Jade Pearce. We all think we know how to learn, but it's often better for learners to do so counter-intuitively by encountering challenging conditions during the learning process ("desirable difficulties"). These may seem to be an obstacle but help retention and so long-term learning. Examples are spacing out or interleaving learning, or taking a test. To quote from the book: “Spacing makes the learning process more challenging as between each episode some forgetting occurs. However this forgetting also allows for greater storage strength and so supports long-term retention.” It is an great, easy to read and short book, presenting these important ideas very well with practical examples. Important for anyone involved in learning and teaching.
Thank you so much, John.
I unlock the potential of senior leaders to transform struggle into ease, through programs that accelerate personal growth.
3wA great find, John - more and more I'm seeing all difficulties as desirable. My difficulties of course, others' are not my business to comment on.
