As an owner of a law firm you might be looking to expand, scale and maybe prepare for exit, but you’re unsure of exactly how to achieve this. Maybe you've considered having a trusted advisor to support you on your journey, but you’re concerned about your ROI, your Return On Investment. And rightly so. It’s a risk you want to mitigate. If you’re unclear on the tangible benefits you're going to see from your investment, then how can you be sure it’s a good idea? And how are you going to justify the decision to your other shareholders? You might decide to invest in a coach/ consultant/ mentor only to find that you have more work to do, higher stress levels, and you don’t see the immediate benefits – and it’s cost you hard-earned money. We’ve all done it, it can leave you with a sour taste in your mouth, or even a sickening feeling when you've given your hard-earned money to someone else for little or no return. No one wants that. I was asked to support a Managing Partner of a law firm just as they were starting in their new role. This was the first time they had been in a senior role, so they wondered if it would be better to start sooner or later. They made the decision to get started rather than wait. Within the first year: - They smashed their revenue and profit goals. - Grew the team. - And for the first time in the firm’s history the department heads were starting to manage profit in their own departments. I had someone say to me once “I don't want someone telling me what to do”. And I thought, “Good. Because that’s exactly what I don’t do! 😊 Despite 15 years as a Physical Training Instructor in the Army, I can’t even get my young boys to eat their vegetables! ===== Anyway, you’re an adult, you don’t want anyone telling you what to do either. That’s good because coaching is not about telling people what to do. My role is not to tell you what to do but to support you to make the best decisions possible and then take the appropriate actions. This is probably the biggest mistake I see owners of law firms making. And I see it constantly! But to be fair, it’s not only lawyers that I hear this from. “I just need more marketing!” I get this all the time and it’s simply not true. ===== Owners of law firms often think marketing will grow their business. But it won't unless they’ve fixed the fundamentals in their business first. In fact, you might actually be damaging your business with more marketing! What you really want is profit, and you’ll be amazed at how much more profit there is in your practice if you know where to look. Once, we’ve maximised your efficiency and productivity, then we can focus on marketing. Over the years I’ve been told: - “Oh yes, we’ve got a plan, we’re fine, we know what we’re doing”. - “We've got a business plan, but we're still stuck”. - “Business plans don’t work”. I’ve heard all sorts. ===== If you’ve got a well written (documented) business plan that is regularly reviewed, and you’re monitoring all your KPIs and metrics so that you can adapt to stay on track to achieve your objectives & goals, then that’s brilliant. But what I often find is that all the above isn’t quite done well enough to hit target. ===== Sometimes plans don’t exist, the business owners are just doing what they think is best. Sometimes businesses have great plans but lack effective implementation. Are you managing a law practice and feeling too busy to grow the business, or even too busy to retire? I was asked to support the partners of a law firm whilst one of the senior partners prepared to retire. They all wanted the senior partner to have an enjoyable last year in the practice and leave the firm in a great position. ===== This might sound like an easy task, but the reality was that all the partners were working crazy hours, and there were a lot of issues that needed clearing up post-Covid. And the partners fee-earning workload made it really tough for them to work “ON” the business. Sound familiar? ===== So, we focused on: - Getting control of their time. - Maximising and monitoring profits - Monitoring cash flow - Developing the department heads to actually run their departments more profitably rather than just focusing on fee-earning work ==== The result: - The senior partner left on schedule, and now the other partners have brilliant control of their finances and their team. ==== If you or one of your partners want to retire from your business, then it’s critical to get everything organised as soon as possible.
