Since 2019 NSW residents have endured more than 65 natural disasters. In 2022 alone, more than 20,000 homes were damaged. These disasters have taught us a lot about the power and resilience of communities, but also about the importance of being ready and knowing what to do when they happen. RA has launched a new campaign to help do just that. By downloading these four apps, you can be better prepared for a natural disaster: 📱 Hazards Near Me – Set up a watch zone to receive notifications on changing conditions. 📱 Emergency Plus – The 'what 3 words' feature shares your precise location with Emergency Services. 📱 BOM Weather – Check for weather forecasts and warnings. 📱 Live Traffic NSW – Plan ahead and see what hazards are impacting your route on NSW roads. Spread the word to ensure you, your family and friends are prepared for a natural disaster. Definitely an important tool for any Highway Authority dealing with flooding. By using Live Link, you're able to send authoritative instructions to Google Maps, Apple Maps, TomTom, etc. stating the exact sections of roads that have been closed. Importantly, these are actioned with dotted red lines in minutes, not 30-40 minutes as many would otherwise experience. By using Live Link, the online mapping providers that support many of the SatNav users, update their maps without first validating closures. This means that many road users are informed within minutes of a Live Link closure being activated greatly reducing the traffic and congestion that would otherwise build up in the first 30-60 minutes.
With the current severe storms and more on the way, preparing for impact to the road network is essential to keep drivers safe and the roads running. Mass flooding and fallen trees present significant safety hazards for road users and need to be communicated quickly ⛈️ Fortunately, many highway authorities now have the power to close a road and communicate it in near real-time to all major sat-nav apps using our Live Link solution. They can redirect drivers down safer routes and help emergency responders reach their destinations faster. Though we wish emergency closures were never necessary, sadly that's just not the case; authorities across the East Midlands have already successfully used Live Link to close roads throughout October during floods.
