With the increasing requirement to select alternatives to fossil fuels as the source of energy for hot water and space heating, this blog looks at how site constraints can influence the specification of the right heat pump for residential projects. It is one in a series of blogs that will highlight key areas to address and includes extracts from our white paper: ‘A technical guide to the specification of heat pumps for single dwellings and multi-occupancy residential or mixed-use developments’. Tour Report of District Heating Systems in Europe The 8th edition of the District Energy Digest from the Boltzmann Institute of Canada summarizes the learnings from a recent study tour of #districtheating systems in Europe. The tour report is an excellent read of what can be done if we are open to different technologies to achieve our #decarbonization goals for #buildingheat. To receive a copy of the 8th edition of the digest with the tour report please request a copy at: [email protected] District heating is well suited to #highdensityurbanareas. In lower density suburban and rural areas we may need to look at other low emission technologies such as electrically driven heat pumps (ground and/or air sourced) with electrical resistance heating, thermal storage or low emission liquid fuels as backup to air sourced heat pumps during the coldest winter days. The transition to cleaner systems for building heat would progress faster and more efficiently if government would sponsor the required engineering and economic studies of available low emission technologies and their physical architecture (#buildingcentred versus #communitycentred technologies).

In the construction industry, energy efficiency has become a critical consideration for residential and commercial buildings. With the increasing focus on sustainability and reduced energy consumption, accurate U-value calculations have emerged as a vital factor for stakeholders including product distributors and installers, contractors, and builder’s merchants. In our 'Summing-up the importance of accurate U-value calculations for building stakeholders' we explore the role correct U-value calculations play in delivering healthy, comfortable properties that achieve regulation levels of thermal performance. To address existing building energy retrofits: how many buildings are there in the US? What sizes, what uses? This is based on a great post by the Construction Physics blog: https://lnkd.in/g-bqX2-j looking across several data sources to approximate US building stock characteristics. Conclusions: 60% single family, 25% commercial by total area. Vast majority of buildings (by area) are less than 10,000 sf. Lots of other ways to look at this data. The solution is likely to be an enormous number of home energy audits and weatherization, with airtightness, insulation, and heat pumps the likely strategies, along with EV integration and demand response. Building Performance Standards that address existing building efficiency often only apply to buildings over 20k or 50k sf.
