A call to action when you interact with people today A few days ago I had the honour of giving a talk on 'Grief, Special Needs and How to Thrive' if I am brutally honest not only was I very nervous about giving the talk but it pushed me to my very limits, it caused me or perhaps enabled me to reflect upon my life, my struggles with my own neurodiversity, my own struggles with friends and family members who had and have a range of disabilities. Emma Bara and I set up WeCanAccess Ltd in order to enable us to thrive, in order for our kids to thrive and for families like ours who struggle every minute of every day due to the systemic failures due to processes, systems and gatekeepers. Where I am going with this, today when you meet with someone, email them and interact with them think very carefully about what the purpose of the meeting is, what they require from the interaction and for a moment, just for a moment think why are they communicating with you in the way they are are they deprived of sleep as they are carers, are they in pain which you do not know about, are they on medication they causes them to forget or act slower are they suffering from PTSD or something else. Can schools be the frontline in mental health education? Throughout my teaching career in NYC, the intersection of education and mental health became increasingly clear. Students’ academic performances are closely tied to their emotional well-being. Yet, the current education system often overlooks this connection. My shift towards mental health therapy is driven by a desire to change this narrative. The key? Integrating mental health education within the school curriculum. Schools need to be equipped with resources and training to address mental health proactively, not reactively.
