I saw a TikTok recently where a 50-something woman was making fun of 20-something’s in the workplace. She laughed, “They don’t know how to address an envelope!” In response, a 20-something challenged the 50-something to send an email with very specific permissions and attachment requirements. I’m not going to take sides here, but one thing is clear: each person has something to learn from the other. 👍Is it good to know how to address an envelope? Yes. 👍Is it also good to know how to send an email with specific requirements? Absolutely. 🌟The question is: do our workplaces foster an environment where this kind of learning can take place? How many of you have older co-workers? As we continue to think about workplaces of the future, we should be able to see a version of ourselves in it, whether that’s today, tomorrow or 10 years from now. ☕If you’re getting ready to change roles, pay attention to who you meet in the interview process. Social media and online dating are in a state of upheaval. When these technologies first came out, they were bright, shiny toys. They opened new worlds from our computer screens...and then our phones...that were easy, fun, and instantly accessible. But no high comes without a crash. I just read an article about how burnt out young adults are with online dating and how singles mixers and speed dating are making a comeback. And then there's all the more sinister effects of the thought-less approach many of the giants in the world of social media take. At their worst, we've seen some of their practices lead to outright death and destruction. At minimum, exclusion, baked-in discrimination, and mental illness. Fortunately, there are people like Jennifer Rhiannon Lewis who are thinking deeply...and acting on...all of these issues. At every stage of co-founding and running Lex, the social app for LGBTQ+ community, she and her team are using this technology to bring about a better world. It can be scary or overwhelming to venture into the world of video. Sometimes you can feel like you missed the boat. But it's not too late. You just have to get up off your chair and do it. Me. wink wink But we can't let the fact that we might be "women of a certain age" stop our forward movement. (I think I'm starting to dislike that term.) But it's so easy to compare ourselves to younger folks. But age is your superpower. It really is.
