The sale and layoffs of Deadspin are not surprising at all. The site's traffic plummeted after the first sale in 2019? and original writers who made the site interesting left. As I always say: 1. Don't believe what a firm's owners nor leaders nor HR says. If that means not telling you layoffs are coming until they happen, so be it. Their job is to protect the firm, not YOU. 2. Your job is to protect YOU, not them. This means staying up on what's being written/posted about your employer. The layoffs that you just found out about were reported on business sites months earlier. 3. Always be ready to get a new job. I get a lot of clients who suddenly laid off, haven't looked at new jobs for a while, haven't interviewed in years and/or their resume doesn't sell their brand effectively. Stay ready at all times. Two strong themes are emerging from my conversations in the last day in the aftermath of mass layoffs at work. First, no one discusses the onset of survivors’ guilt and imposter syndrome for people who make it through a mass layoff event. Maybe it’s considered taboo to talk about your problems when you are employed and others are not? Second, we don’t discuss the mental health aspect of being laid off enough. There’s the compulsion to mask the fear of the unknown after a layoff, and because most of us cannot go on with extended unemployment, rather than grieve what has happened and truly process it, we dive right into networking and job searching, which isn’t super healthy. Honest and frank conversations about the effects of layoffs, both seen and unseen, are something that I hope to see more of on LinkedIn and in my personal connections as mass layoffs, even in a “good economy,” continue to occur with regularity.

One of the biggest mistakes I made - Not being prepared when I was laid off. And recovering from it was extremely challenging. Since it is difficult to foresee layoffs, there are ways that you prepare yourself (if it does happen to you): - Maintain an “emergency” fund: Save enough income to cover 3-6 months of living costs, in the worst case scenario. - Diversify income streams: Explore options for passive income or freelance work to provide financial stability during uncertain times. - Update Resume and LinkedIn profile: Keep your resume and LinkedIn profile up to date to attract potential employers. - Skill enhancement: Continously develop your skills to stay competitive. Take courses, attend workshops that align with your career goals. - Network! Network! Network!: Cultivate and nurture professional relationships that can provide support, advice, and potential job leads. So, these are my five tips to preparing for layoffs.
