BA2 Humanities: Tracing the City 🗺️📍 This semester at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), we had a lecture series called 'Tracing the City' which explored different aspects of architecture in terms of urban theory. Lectures ranged from unethical planning practices to the history of production in relation to society. Delving into the philosophy behind urbanism was really interesting, especially when considering how our own surroundings fit into the narrative of a city. Attached is my final submission for this module, where we were tasked to analyse the urban realm we live in: 1. Respond to a section of Oxford Road in the style of Raymond Unwin 2. Create a narrative about Oxford Road in the style of Italo Calvino 3. Unpack an aspect of urban "nature" and it's relationship with human systems 4. Does architecture have linkages to eco-anxiety? Can it even be violent? The relevance of the question is found when the immense environmental problems of construction are compared to recent findings that show how 66% of youth worldwide reported eco-anxiety. The beauty or functionality of buildings are of little benefit, if they come with heavy collateral damage. However, there are emerging examples of architecture that not only utilise efficient ecological design solutions, but also offer room for dealing with difficult eco-emotions or communicate alternative values to consumerism. I had the privilege to present the findings of (in our understanding) the first scientific article on the connections between architecture and eco-emotions at ARCH24, the 6th International Conference on Architecture, Research, Care and Health. Co-authored with Sanna Lehtinen of Aalto University and Panu Pihkala of the University of Helsinki. To be published in a journal later this year.

LINK: https://lnkd.in/d3ru3Sr2 The special issue Writing Urban Places: New Narratives on the European City, marks the culmination of an international research network that delved into the intricate interplay between communities, urban spaces and narratives. At its core, this endeavour introduced an inventive approach aimed at deepening our comprehension of urban communities, their dynamics and their rootedness, all through the lens of narrative methodologies. This collection gives an account of the dynamics of this network of academics, which consists of over 175 individuals from 35 different European countries and a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. As such, the issue offers a conclusion to the Writing Urban Places COST Action while also, hopefully, providing a springboard for further reflections and discussions on urban narratives, and the role these could play in spatial developments in the European city.

Wilfried Wang, Professor at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, will be delivering a lecture titled “Visions for Berlin-Brandenburg and the Lower Rhine Valley”. In turn, Sophia Psarra, Professor at the University of Michigan and Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University, will talk about “Parliament Buildings: the Architecture of Politics in Europe”. Call for abstracts: City Street 6 Conference in Skopje, Republic of North Macedonia https://lnkd.in/eMWfM-zf Track 1: Streets as Infrastructure for Sympatry Track Chairs Jorge Mejía Hernández and Slobodan Velevski In his influential introduction to the edited volume "On Streets" (1978), architecture historian Stanford Anderson employed the concept of 'sympatry' from ecological sciences to assess the functionality of streets. In essence, sympatry denotes environments where diverse and potentially conflicting species simultaneously contribute to and utilize vastly different resources, thereby fostering the preservation and enhancement of their habitat. This track invites contributors to scrutinize current calls for inclusivity and diversity in the built environment through the perspective of sympatry. The goal is to assess, based on tangible evidence, the practical benefits (or lack thereof) of human diversity in the creation and use of streets. Building upon Anderson's insights into streets as spaces where reciprocal interactions between users and their environments create a unique urban ecology, the track aims to unveil distinct relational principles at play within the socio-physical environment of actual streetscapes. Potential contributions may include case studies exploring instances where the coexistence of different 'species' of human individuals correlates with the quality of a specific built environment. Additionally, analyses could delve into how a broad spectrum of interests and capabilities, observable in diverse individuals, influences their utilization and provision of resources in specific city areas. The track also welcomes theoretical reflections on expansive approaches to diversity, moving beyond dialectic, binary, or dichotomous modes of interpretation.
