WHO SUCCEEDS BIDEN? What’s missing from today’s conversation about Biden’s age is the succession plan. At a certain point during his next presidency, Kamala Harris will likely have to take the reins. She’s not even in serious discussion about potential replacements, if Biden steps down. That’s how few people want her as president! While I don’t think Biden will willingly step down from his candidacy, he must replace his Vice Presidential candidate — and give the new one a MUCH higher profile. If Biden wants to win in the fall, he must be seen as a figure head, not a day-to-day operating executive. We all need a plan to leverage our weaknesses. We also benefit from working with fate, rather than against it. California Governor Gavin Newsom has been wise in defering to Biden. As this all shakes out, it might well buy him a seat in the Oval Office — without the hell or risk of actually running for it. #joebiden #election #debate

I really like Newsom but on second thought... We really need women to vote in massive numbers, and many would be rightfully offended if progress was once again rolled back and their vote was once again taken for granted! At a time with abortion so central to the debate, a ticket without a woman as president or VP pick is unlikely to energize enough women. And especially in a time of looming war, we also need someone that would have the respect of the military and veterans! I assume (hope) this person(s) exist but I can't think of them.

In a recent round table discussion with a group of college seniors it was brought up that the VP should also be an elected by the people as they are one heartbeat away from being the leader of the free world. The entire roundtable group of 20 and an audience of over 300 all agreed. Their logic was that choosing a running mate simply to attract voters based on race, gender etc over qualifications is to diminish the strength of the office and invalidates the confidence of the office of Presidency. Our future leaders are watching this political rhetoric, dissecting it and forward thinking. The future is in their hands and it might look quite different. I am encouraged when I heard statements like When We or When I instead of IFs...

Has Kamala Harris performed particularly badly as vice president, or does she simply face the same prejudgements as many women and people of color? She did well as a senator and a state AG. Stick to the facts in her case, please-"she's unpopular" goes to my point.

I am confused. So he should continue with the assumption that he will (most probably) need to be replaced? That is like deliberately driving on bad tyres and saying - we have a good spare! That is some convoluted reasoning. Has Biden watched himself from Thursday night? It was a debacle - and that is the polite version.

I have no problem with Harris, but if it became an issue of shoring up the ticket, I'd probably nominate Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan as VP. She has a highly favorable rating among Democrats, is young but not too young at 52, and would strengthen Biden's appeal in the upper Midwest. Harris would be offered the plum role of Attorney General, I respect Newsom, but I don't see him going for the VP slot.

With the Democrats there is at least a semblance of a succession plan. The Republicans on the other hand are acting as if the world ends with Trump.

I am wondering why you are even contemplating Biden. He is clearly not fit for office and should retire pretty much straight away. He is off with the fairies and has been for some time. He should never have been preselected in the first place. Clearly someone else is running the show.

I think the missing conversation point is America has serious structural issues that have been ignored for decades with powerful interests that benefit from a weakened, indebted, indentured populace. I don't think either candidate is competent.

The backlash against Biden actually hurts his chances in November ("his own party urged him to not run").
