41% of employees worldwide experience significant stress on a daily basis. Yet stress levels can vary greatly depending on how organizations are managed. Employees at companies with poor management practices are nearly 60% more likely to feel stressed compared to those in well-managed, engaging environments. Leaders know workplace stress is a problem, and not just because they’re hearing about it from their employees — they're also experiencing it themselves. A quarter of leaders report feelings of burnout. Although many are trying to address it, it’s often in ineffective ways. Discover Gallup’s latest insights on employee stress, workplace wellbeing, and their impact on organizational performance in our newly released State of the Global Workplace: 2024 Report. https://lnkd.in/eeQHq65i

Stress actually isn’t the issue. Our bodies are actually made to handle stress- but when we become dysregulated or unable to cope- that’s when stress becomes an issue. Most people have lost their way in building stress resilience because our workplace cultures (and general culture) are designed to priortize output. And worse, stress is contagious so if leaders are stressed their communication style, patience, ability to mentor and manage and much more are negatively impacted so it trickles down. Our nervous systems can actually be thrown off if others around us are dysregulated. This is a systems and priority problem and until we recognize that wellness programs only address part of the issue this will continue to persist.

Data is certainly alarming for the companies , boards and investors because if this situation persist it will eventually impact business and stakeholders interest. While 41% huge , I am just wondering how much is self imposed and how much it is coming from enviornment ? If one is inherently stressed prone and external environment adding further - then how will it look like ? Further, global geopolitical scenario, business uncertainty, economies crippling and job cuts ; are they contributing to such stress . Worth considering..

Optimal stress is an opportunity for us to perform at our best. Chronic stress and a build up of this chronic stress to levels which impact our elasticity and resilience is the challenge we need to address. Chronic stress and burnout need to be addressed in a systematic way. The expectations on both corporate leaders and the staff has increased dramatically, and the rapidly accelerating pace of social change, workplace change, geopolitical change, and much more, makes this a critical issue to address.

There’s way more burnout than this reveals, but many leaders especially won’t put that on a survey. They may tell a spouse, coach or therapist…

Look stress and anxiety has become a business for psychologist, pharmaceutical, holistic treatment, etc. Why would anyone want to fix it. It's 600 to 800 billion dollars of inpact on businesses. Posting such items have you noted the dogs and cats get more views on LinkedIn than mental health... what does that tell you?

In my opinion, a good boss should reduce the stress level of his/her team and protect them from unwarranted or unnecessary stress. (NOTE: reducing stress does not mean that people won’t sometimes have tough assignments or unpleasant tasks. But if these are handled properly and the team is properly motivated, the stress level of such assignments can be reduced.). If this worked all the way UP the chain, everyone’s stress level would be reduced. Unfortunately, this is not the way that things usually work. In most cases, the stress is created at the top and works its way down.

It's concerning to see that 41% of employees worldwide experience significant stress daily. The link between management practices and stress levels is clear, with poor management exacerbating the problem. Leaders are not immune, with a quarter reporting burnout themselves. It's crucial that organizations take effective measures to address workplace stress. Looking forward to reading Gallup's State of the Global Workplace: 2024 Report for more insights on how we can improve employee wellbeing and organizational performance. How is your organization tackling this issue?

Many confuse stress with pressure. Stress is being tasked with an outcome but having no control over, for example, alternatives, methods, decisions or timing. Being on a production line is stressful. Having to meet deadlines with accurate results is pressure. Pressure is a positive - the degree to which people can handle pressure varies by person, time, context etc. Some people handle pressure, some thrive on it, some fold. If the suggestion is to modify the work to accommodate the employee, then there's a mismatch: hire the right people and move ill-suited people to roles that suit their capabilities, if such roles exist. Or move people on - there's probably a job in Federal State or Local that is a better match. Get out of the kitchen.
