All the world is a stage
and the CIA knows it….
So it makes sense we’d see some overlap after all both organizations are considered global leaders. With a penchant for hiring the best talent available and arming them with the most advanced technology and resources available.
Artists thrive in this kind of environment.
It’s why Silicon Valley looks like a giant frat house, they want to create an environment where the mind wonders and true creativity can thrive. And the appeal for professional creatives is obvious and logical.
Conversely, It’s also why the starving artist is such a stereotype, when left to our own devices we won’t build that infrastructure for ourselves naturally. Far too many fun new worlds to create with brush, pen, or lens.
When a creative is supported by an ecosystem they are able to do wonders.
When they are forced to navigate the world of numbers and rules on the business side they often have the best of intentions and the worst execution, resulting in more stress and less art.
So larger organizations will always have an edge in that sense, but when those same systems become constricting as the artist grows we see a natural need to exit.
The largest organizations often have the ability to allow the creative to grow well within their personal ability and ambition. However, most organizations will hit a limit and as a result look to either constrain or replace artists that become too much of a drain on the system at a time most businesses are cutting internal creative costs.
I may be wrong. But I believe we are going to see a massive increase in creator owned IP as these professionals start joining together on their own terms and using technology to fill in the gaps and create efficient solutions to tell their own stories.
As a fan I couldn’t be more excited.

What do Walt Disney Studios and the Office of Strategic Services—the predecessor of today's CIA—have in common? Legendary camera effects artist Robert “Bob” Carey Broughton created award-winning films for both organizations.
Bob Broughton worked on virtually every #Disney animated movie in his 45-year career, from 𝘚𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘋𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘧𝘴 to 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘢 to 𝘉𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪. His specialty, however, was combining live action with animation: He made penguins dance and Mary Poppins fly.
During #WWII, Broughton joined #OSS and together with Hollywood director John Ford created documentary films about the war, including the Academy Award-winning movie, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘸𝘢𝘺. During his time with OSS, he helped institutionalize the use of film in #intelligence.
