BIM’s Annual National Seafood Survey for Fisheries is now LIVE!     BIM conducts an annual survey in which all active vessels are requested to submit economic, employment and operational details. If your vessel was active in 2022, please ensure that you complete the survey before the end of January deadline.    The survey asks a series of questions about the financial and operational performance of fishing vessels and the demographics of the crew. The findings of the survey provide key data and insights into the status of Ireland’s fishing sector on an annual basis. The returns form the basis for the justification of national and EU grant aid programmes, focused on supporting the industry and coastal communities.    🔐 Your Privacy Matters:  Rest assured, the data gathered is reported in an aggregated format, ensuring confidentiality. Your company or you as an individual cannot be identified.     🗓 Deadline:  Act fast! The official survey ends on 31st January.   Completing the survey is a legal requirement (S.I. Drought and warm water threaten salmon in B.C. rivers, streams and hatcheries. Hatcheries need cool, fresh water to operate and produce healthy fish that support conservation, rebuilding, stock assessment and fisheries. That’s why we’re working hard to mitigate the risk of extended dry weather conditions to our hatchery facilities. Supported by Canada’s Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, we’re protecting our hatcheries against drought by improving water intakes and groundwater supplies, improving the efficiency of water use, and deploying backup aeration and oxygenation systems. We’re also adjusting our activities, techniques and timing to reduce heat related stress on fish. These are just some of the steps we’re taking to support salmon during extreme environmental events. How do we teach effective pest control methods? By starting young. Primary school teachers in New Zealand are teaching under-fives about pests, including how to catch them, how to treat them humanely, and why they often appear "at the wrong place." It's a pretty cool initiative, I have to say. I actually think early exposure like this would be a great way to help get over fear of pests and animals. Plus, who knows, it could lead to a career in a great industry 😉 #pestcontrol #education #training

New "Angler Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) Recommendations" were approved at the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies Business Meeting in late March and published this week. Preliminary results from the joint GSSA-USFWS Coleman Hatchery project highlight the benefits of trucking hatchery #salmon during droughts. Of the two controlled groups that were 100% tagged, reports show that trucking 2020 brood stock fish 75 miles downstream during the 2021 drought increased returns 11 times that of fish directly released. Six times more salmon from the trucked fish were caught in the ocean! #GSSA continues to work with agencies to truck hatchery fish in drought conditions to increase survival and champion new release sites further west in the Bay, where we have seen survival double compared to prior bay release sites. After encouragement from GSSA to reintroduce the surplus fry program in 2021 and participate in the parent-based tagging, Coleman has assured us that they are taking skin samples from all unclipped two-year-old Jack returns. We are anxiously awaiting the results. Curious how fish populations are doing in your favorite Great Lake? Previously, “State of the Lake” reports would take years to publish and contained lots of technical information to wade through. Beginning in 2019, State of the Lake Report dashboards now provide an interactive, online tool to explore the status of various fish communities, habitat, and sea lamprey control for lakes Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. Users can see simple ratings of good-fair-poor for higher-level metrics such as “inshore fish,” and then dig deeper to view more detailed trends on metrics of interest such as walleye or salmonid harvest. The State of the Lake dashboards increase access for constituents and provide a succinct and easily understood science-based evaluation of the health of the lakes and their fisheries.
