So many races, from Tour de France to the Olympics - and yet the biggest race of all is whether we #endOvershoot by design or by disaster. Bigotry and exclusion are still among us, we have made progress since 1936, and still, there is a good way to go. Also other things have changed since 1936. Back then, humanity used about 0.6 Earths, and now we are at 1.7 Earths. I know human ingenuity and the spirit of collaboration makes incredible things possible. The 1984 Olympic games in LA were when the Games went fully commercial - they were the first profitable Olympics ever. 🙌🏼 For 2028, LA already has existing infra that they will capitalize on including UCLA’s coveted university campus which will temporarily serve as the Olympic Games village, minimizing the cost of organizing the games. 🙌🏼 By 2028, the Games might reflect an even stronger commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, building on the progressive steps taken by Paris this year. The historic inclusion of cricket, after nearly a century, signals a bold move by the Olympic Committee to broaden the Games' global appeal. "Should the institution [Olympic Games] prosper...it may be a potent, if indirect, factor in securing universal peace,” these are the words of the founder of the modern Olympic, Games Baron Pierre de Coubertin, written in 1896. “Wars break out because nations misunderstand each other. We shall not have peace until the prejudices which now separated the different races have been outlived. To attain this end, what better means than to bring the youth of all countries periodically together for amicable trials of muscular strength and agility?" He believed today's youth are tomorrow's world leaders. One very good reason why the Olympics should remain for athletes from everywhere. Where else does such a gathering happen? Some will argue de Coubertin's founding principle is too idealistic for the reality of today's world. It is also worth noting, every athlete who has ever won an Olympic gold medal began their journey with a dream, a dream which many would have described as impossible. #Olympics #OlympicGames #Paris2024
