I can't imagine standing out in a sea of professionals In the competitive landscape of today's professional world Christy was the most respected employee in a big financial Bank, known for her wisdom, kindness, smartness and hard work. When the CEO of her bank needed a new advisor, Christy heard about the position, the first person that came to her mind was Benson, a young wizard with potentials who worked at a microfinance bank. A remarkable story from a colleague Career Paths Aren't Always Linear, sometimes to attain your career goal, you might have to move sideways, backwards or even take a completely different path. I recently encountered a colleague whose journey beautifully illustrates this principle. Daniel Manqadi, now our CBD Branch Manager, made a bold decision to scale down on his role in order to pivot to banking. His goal was clear: whatever it takes to understand the banking industry and have a great career he will pay the price. Prior to banking, Daniel was a country branch manager in the television and broadcasting industry. His passion for banking, driven by entrepreneurial and fintech interests, led him to this career path. To penetrate the banking industry, Daniel joined another financial institution as a sales consultant a role much lower than his previous role. Because of his love for the Stanbic Bank brand he quickly transitioned to Stanbic Bank as a team leader at one of our branches, yet another lower role than his role in the broadcasting and TV industry. Through these roles, he learned new skills, faced new challenges, and developed fresh perspectives about banking. He started from the core of the business, immersing himself in the culture, values, people, processes, and operations. This hands-on approach anchored his understanding and prepared him to be a better leader. Hardly over a year in his role as a team leader he was promoted to his current role as a branch manager. Daniel believes that stepping into a leadership role requires a fundamental shift because In leadership, the emphasis moves from knowing it all to guiding and empowering others. Daniel shared a powerful message that resonates deeply: "In pursuit of achieving one's goals, ambitions, and aspirations, sometimes, less is truly more. Scaling down can give you the foundations to scale up to new and higher heights." He also reminded me of one of his favorite quotes by Josh Billings: "Half of the problems of this life can be traced to saying yes too quickly and not saying no soon enough." To say yes to the right things or no to anything that does not advance your journey, you need to be crystal clear on your ultimate goal. I'm fortunate enough to work with some fantastic clients. I've also worked with one or two that I probably wouldn't want to revisit. My fault of course, but I'm human like everyone else and on occasion, I have made mistakes. I'm very clear when I complete a discovery conversation with any prospective client, that if I believe I can deliver genuine value, then I'll push for the business. If I don't believe I'm the right fit, then I walk away. I never want to be accused of working with a business knowing that my skillsets are tenuous for their requirements. My integrity and that of my business is way more important than a few quid in the bank. That said, I have got it wrong. I have completed a fact find, concluded that I can help, only to discover once I've started work that not everything is as it seems. Recently, I had to extricate myself from a difficult conversation. I'd been working with a client for about four weeks and it was becoming clear that the sales team were not the issue. In fact, they were delivering consistently against target and were fully engaged with their roles and what the business needed to achieve. The problem was the Management Team. It's a difficult conversation when you have to say to the Board or the Management Team, your team is great. They don't need me. However, there are issues that have become apparent and they stem from the actions (or lack of) from the very people who brought you in. Nevertheless, that conversation needs to be had. To quote Brené Brown, 'choose discomfort over resentment'. Sometimes it goes well and they are open to hear more. Sometimes it goes less well. In this case, it went less well. For a while they weren't impressed. Words were said. I don't imagine I'll be on their Christmas Card list this year. I was down one client maybe, but my integrity remained in tact. It was uncomfortable but only for a moment. I boarded the train feeling rather proud of myself. I had done the right thing. I had flagged up what I believed to be the source problem and had acted with their best interests at heart. What they do with my report is up to them. What is the biggest fear in your banking career? Being left behind or being afraid of failure/success? In the fast-paced world of banking, it's natural to have concerns about your career trajectory. The fear of being left behind can be paralysing, as the industry continues to evolve and new technologies disrupt traditional practices.
