Honestly, I've sat on this draft trying to think about what I wanted to use this post for and how I wanted it to land on any potential reader. Recently, I was one of the 170 individuals impacted by the layoffs at Discord. However, I don't want to just inform my network that I am open to new positions and work, but to also share some perspective and give visibility to a community that is often overlooked in tech. Many of my colleagues and I come from immigrant or working-class backgrounds, and layoffs often have a deeper impact on us than just losing a stable income. For those of us who grew up with financial instability, a layoff can feel like a fight or flight crisis. Our parents' sacrifices and struggles for the American Dream add to the guilt and disappointment we feel when we lose our jobs. Imposter syndrome can also creep in as we question our worth and abilities. To those who may be feeling similarly, know that it's okay to feel the myriad of emotions that may come. Losing a job sucks, and there's no sugar coating it. But remember that your skills, potential, and hard work landed you your previous job and will lead you to your next opportunity. You've grown and accomplished so much since your last application, so don't sell yourself short. Hold your head up high and celebrate all that you've achieved from then until now. I hope sharing my perspective will provide validation and visibility to those who often go unaddressed in tech unless tokenized. And to any recruiters or hiring managers out there, I am open to new positions and opportunities and would love to connect you to any and all of my talented colleagues across different backgrounds in tech.

Some things I’ve learned since the layoff: ▪️It wasn’t personal. It’s business. I was laid off for non-performance reasons. ▪️It’s an incredibly stressful situation. Give yourself grace, protect your peace, and take care of yourself. ▪️The application and interview process can be hard on your confidence. Start a list of your accomplishments. My heart goes out to those who have been impacted by recent layoffs. Remember, this is not a reflection of you or your performance. Your worth is not defined by this moment. While the job market may seem overwhelming, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that there are many job openings available. However, the bad news is that there are also many people looking. From my personal experience, I learned that finding a job takes time and it's okay to take breaks from the job hunt. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable and let your network know that you're looking. The people who helped me the most were unexpected, but they had empathy and wisdom to share. My two biggest takeaways were the importance of keywords in your resume and searching for human connections at companies you're interested in. I'm happy to connect with anyone who needs help with their resume or navigating LinkedIn for job search. Remember, the right company for you will find you. #layoffs

Shhhh 🤫 This is one piece of career advice you DO NOT want to share with your employer. “You should NEVER take yourself off the job market” EVER! I don’t care if you have a good job, or if you have no job at all, you should never stop your job search. Seem a little extreme? Think about it like this… Any company you work for is looking out for themselves and their stakeholders first… why shouldn’t you do the same? Company loyalty starts and ends with their bottom line. Just look at the recent tech layoffs if you want to see “corporate loyalty” in action! Now, don’t take this as an excuse to perform poorly or act unprofessionally… Instead, think of it as an invitation to prioritize yourself in your career. This starts with always being on the lookout for new and better opportunities.  With this attitude you’ll be ready if something happens at your current employer. And if nothing happens, and you simply want to enjoy a better job opportunity, you’ll be ready for that too! Happy searching : )

I needed to pause today and share something heavy on my heart. The news about the recent layoffs has been tough to digest. Seeing so many talented people, who are more than just their jobs, face this sudden uncertainty is disheartening. Please know that this situation is not a measure of your abilities or your worth. But remember this, every end is a new beginning, and better opportunities are out there waiting for you. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your network for advice, support, and potential leads. The LinkedIn community is incredibly supportive, and many have been through similar experiences. Remember, setbacks are often setups for comebacks. Stay Strong, Stay Positive, and Keep Moving Forward.

It's been 214 days since I was laid off suddenly from a job that I loved. 214 days of dreaming about what the future holds. 214 days without the team and organization I believed in. 214 days of scouring job boards, hopefully applying and often being met with radio silence. 214 days of DMs reaching out for feedback and insight, often leading to no replies and getting left on read. 214 days of checking portals to find that applications are still in an endless cycle of "review". There are days where it feels like I'm throwing CVs into a black hole, and when you do get a reply, it's usually a canned robo-response. "We decided to move forward with other candidates." "We wish you the best in your search." "We know this isn't the news you wanted to hear." This is a gentle reminder that there are hundreds of incredibly talented people in your network quietly looking for work in a job market that is wilder than any I've ever seen before. It's also a sober call to remember that in tech, or any industry for that matter, layoffs can happen to anyone. Don't take good work for granted. Tell your teammates you're thankful for them, and in all that you do strive to remain grateful - even when things get boring. Good work is a gift, truly. Take time to reach out to your friends who are looking for their next gig. Ask how they're doing. Check up on their mental health. Send articles and leads. And memes. Meet up for coffee, and if they ask for help do the best you can to point them in the right direction. It takes a village, and after all, we're all in this together. 🙏

I responded to a post about serially being laid-off. I've been part of 4 layoffs/re-orgs in the past 15 years. This seems to be a theme in marketing departments. I thought I'd repost my thoughts here. It is disheartening when you are let go from a job. It's hard to not take it personally. The Rocky quote comes to mind: "You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward." This is easier said than done. The anxiety that comes with losing a job can be crippling. You have to fight through the doubts, and motivate. Apply to new jobs, network, learn new skills. Keep pushing, keep applying, keep interviewing. If you have the know-how in your field, the work will eventually come. Opportunities appear when you least expect. A lot of people aren't great self-marketers. Maybe take the time off to think about "your brand" or what you really want to do. I know that we'd all be happier being the person we want to be and doing the work we want to do instead of the person we think people or employers are looking for. I say all this having my last contract end abruptly, with no immediate employment options on the horizon. Not feeling great about it, but the spark of hope and the thought of new opportunity has me optimistic. Let's see what happens...

Layoffs suck. That's not a surprise. I thought the worst part was when I was laid off. I was wrong. What's harder? Seeing former colleagues, family, and friends with the "Open to Work" banner that has been up for months, if not years. Incredibly talented and hard working people who just need a chance. I want to help. So, who needs the best Project Manger I've ever worked with, who has turned around the "difficult" clients (we all know they exist) and made the project successful? I know him. Who needs an operations executive who is not only a well rounded, amazing employee with a ton of experience in helping teams succeed, and is also a fantastic person? I know her. Who's looking for a corporate trainer who can jump right in to any situation, and can connect with anyone to make training fun and successful? I know her, too. Among many, many others. I'm keeping an eye on my network to try to connect the right people with the right jobs. Let's get these people to where they can flourish. If you're hiring for any of those roles, reach out. And to anyone in my network looking for a role, reach out. If I can make these connections, it's the least I can do.
