The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) must stop overestimating the impact of automation on controller staffing requirements. Alternatively, to begin to let up on the required staffing of the D-Side position due to the benefits realized by the User Request Evaluation Tool (URET). A much smaller increase in staffing of the handoff position is a better utilization of resources. Computers will NEVER be able to supplant the savvy, intuitive and human nature required of the R-Side position. Computers no matter how clever the A.I. do not think on their feet, outside the box nor think at all. They are ultimately reduced to linear, serial, step-by-step machine language instruction action. ALL parallel activity is simulated. Things may be processed parallel although, they must be meshed and fed through sequentially. Just think of how difficult a time they have with floating point numbers. We have seen the benefits of Moore’s Law since the dawn of computers. The limits have been reached. Brute force cannot be counted on to eventually overcome a human interface. Air Traffic Controllers are artists. A beautiful ballet to observe. One that I had the privilege to participate in. And the honor to pass along to the Next Generation of controllers the tools and techniques I picked up from my trainers as well as through my experiences performing the ritual.
