𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨? I get this question a lot whenever I travel and I feel I must get better at answering this. So here goes. And please use the comments section below because your insight on the subject greatly aids my thinking. Basically through a process of trial and error, over the years, I have puzzled out where my strengths lie and how best I can utilise these to help others. I would love to be able to tell you that my talent was of global significance, eg. start a charity to eliminate poverty or perhaps to release my creativity and create a great work of art, or through research discover a new life-saving drug. But I've discovered that is not where my talents are to be found. I'm an enthusiast, I'm driven, pathologically focused on helping others (often forgetting to ask if they want my help), passionate about those subjects I care about, internationally focused and with a talent to convince others to help me build communities aligned around a common goal. My experience and expertise are in the field of business or as we call it today entrepreneurship, investment and innovation. So this self-analysis has led me to accept that I'm a "Community Builder". Never a career I could have imagined and to be honest I would never describe it as a "job". Interestingly I didn't know this until I started doing it and succeeding, but it's the phrase that seems to best describe what I spend most of my time doing. So to answer the question I posed, my why is to help others and the way I do this is by helping them access these communities I've helped build. And I can't stop doing it! I devour content on strategies, technologies and methodologies to ensure these communities thrive. I also spend much time thinking about how we build resilience into these "products of imagination" to ensure that they flourish without the need for my hands-on involvement. I think I'm like early-stage capital. Critical to getting the project up and running but ultimately I need to be replaced if scale is to be achieved. And trust me, to deliver a mission you must scale up. Interestingly I'm still not sure why the "Scottish thing" matters so much in everything I do but it does seem to be a critical component in the fire that drives my passion. It’s Networking Wednesday! Networking Wednesdays are all about taking action and telling stories. The action: doing the daily work to stay connected to my network and actively building relationships for the future. The storytelling: sharing the stories resulting from those relationship building activities so others know the value and learn the impact of doing the work. For example, as a result of staying in touch monthly with one of my biz buddies, she connected me with another female entrepreneur because of our work in nonprofit governance. We met, chatted and things clicked. And after only two meetings, we are already whiteboarding a new collab series on nonprofit governance and leadership from our unique perspectives. I am soooo exciting about this project! Keep an eye out in the next couple months for this series. This is the power of deep listening and being open to connecting people in our professional ecosystem who in turn trust you enough to receive the referral and followup.
