How do some progress at work, while their peers stay stagnant? One of the best traits I have observed from our most successful candidates is their ability to respond to variables. Many variables are beyond our control. And it is natural to feel frustrated and flustered by what we perceive as illogical unfair decisions. For days/weeks/months, most will either come to terms that "this is the way things are", or seek for 'greener pastures', only to realize in time that every company has its own problems (I say with personal experience). Meanwhile, a select few will take control of their emotions, inch towards clarity and bring assurance to others. Humans after all, have an innate desire to feel assured, and it is hard not to notice that comfort. At a personal context, who do you go to when you are feeling down? Someone who can't wait to unload their own set of problems? Or someone who lends a listening ear, gives assurance, and better yet –offers concrete advice to help you up. The best candidates – extrovert or introvert, enjoy longevity in their careers because they are able to bring this (and results). Here’s the #1 thing I have learned about goal setting related to your career: ❇️ It’s okay if your goals and aspirations change. YOU change and your goals will too. My dream was to work internally at a large pharma company. The ‘plan’ was to relocate to Chicago for a big step toward that goal. And then (see the plane in the picture)... I traveled halfway across the world and became a mom to 2, in one week. ❇️ Suddenly, everything changed and my original goal was: –Not realistic –Not what I wanted Something I thought I wanted for SO long wasn’t a priority anymore. I took a step back for a few years in my career. And I would do it again in a heartbeat. A hiring manager I talked to late yesterday afternoon was stressed! She is under pressure to fill 3 remaining MSL roles on her team BUT she also has a POA in early February and a Virtual Advisory Board in two weeks. If you are a hiring manager in January 2024, you can probably relate to her. Here are the main concerns she told me she has with MSL candidates: 1) Will the candidate be willing to travel (even though they say they are)? 2) Will the candidate TRULY connect with KOLs and share the "so what" and not just data dump? 3) Will they bring a balance to the team AND get along with the other team members? 4) Will they keep up with administrative tasks like expense reports so that they don't have to be 'nagged'? 5) Will they be able to meet the demands of their cross-functional partners? 📢 Insights into the Biopharma Job Landscape 🌐 As we say goodbye to September, let's take a closer look at how the job market in biopharma shaped up during the third quarter of 2023. 📊 Here's a simple breakdown: 🔹 Biotech jobs went down by 17% from Q2 and took a whopping 46% drop from last year. 🔹 Pharma positions saw a small 2% decrease from Q2 and a significant 32% decline compared to the previous year. 🔹 Science R&D roles saw a 10% decline from Q2 and a hefty 39% decrease from last year. 🔹 Clinical opportunities followed a similar pattern, declining by 10% from Q2 and 33% from the previous year. The slowdown in hiring is evident, and the comparison with the previous year is quite stark. 📉 However, here's the hopeful part! 🔄 Despite these challenges, the biopharma industry stands strong. 🌟 According to a recent BioSpace survey, 62% of employers are actively looking for new talent, and 27% expect to have more job openings from October to December 2023.
