It has been so, so long since I last wrote – I have since been asked to restart writing and here is one that you may find useful.
I was invited to be part of the panel of judges for Malaysian Human Resource Management, MIHRM’s 23rd Malaysian International HR Awards – mind you I have been doing this over the past 4 years, Alhumdulillah.
What I have observed with participants for this award, some of them, most certainly not all, they do not provide reasons as to why they initiate their HR activities/ initiatives. It cannot be just simply because ‘other companies are doing it therefore so should we’ or even because it is something good to do.
Should we not be basing all our HR activities/ initiatives on the strategic directions of the company and in line with it’s the Vision, Mission or the Values – remember that we are using the company’s resources on these initiative – money, man-hours etc.
Since we are not very clear why we ‘do’ certain things, it follows that we may not even know how to measure the effectiveness of these initiatives - worse still if we are reporting this to the Board, what would we say – we are doing it because it is being done by other companies!
There will be a follow-up session for companies who cleared phase one and that is coming up in another 2/ 3 weeks ie HR Best Practice
Similarly in the introduction of new benefits for employees (I am drawing parallel here) do we introduce this just because other companies have it - really this should not be the reason – we really need to study/ confirm that the introduction will assist in retaining talents, assist us in attracting them and further will it motive staff to increase their work productivity. If it does not or we are not clear, why introduce?
You may ask how I would know if it will…well this is when you need to ask fellow HR people in similar industries (ie was there positive outcomes ie in attracting, retaining and motivating staff) or through surveys.
