Operating on Independence Day: The transplant perspective. 🤔 Diabetes and #kidney failure force reliance on insulin, dialysis, and complex treatments. So too do #liver failure and #heart failure ❤️. This reliance strips the patient of #freedom to live as desired. These conditions take away parts of what make us #human. Always attached to machines. Constantly pricking fingers. Fear of the next set of labs. Patients get trapped. Transplant frees patients from many of these daily struggles. It provides #Independence from machines, medicines and gives patients back their most important asset: #Time ⏰ As I walk l to the main OR on this #Independence Day, focusing the technical challenges of today’s kidney-pancreas #transplant, the impact on our patient, and the #sacrifice made by a donor family along with the sacrifice made by the families of our hard working team members, it is helpful to reflect on why we are here: #Freedom. Today our team of 10 at the Medical University of South Carolina will make a patient independent of machines and insulin. I can think of no better way to spend Independence Day. 🇺🇸

I’m speaking for my husband who is along with us I gave him my kidney and 2012. He passed away and 2024 but not because of the kidney because of many other things that he had going on and his body it really gave him great independence he was able to do all the things that he could not do when I gave him my kidney he didn’t have to do dialysis anymore he only did it for 3months after I gave it to him. I’m so grateful for the transplant more than anything else.

My mom had a bilat lung transplant 4 years ago and it saved more than her life, it also gave as much to her family. Thank you for all you do! You’ll never understand your impact.

This was a wonderful story to read Joe! I had a K-P transplant in 2011 and it gave me back my freedom, my independence, and a new start on life. I am grateful every day for both, the donors and caregivers, who make this possible. Thank you to you and your families who have also sacrificed along the way to make this a reality.
