𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚'𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐲 2060 Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Kementerian Energi Dan Sumber Daya Mineral, through its General Secretary Dadan Kusdiana, has reaffirmed the government's dedication to developing new energy sources, including blue ammonia, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). These initiatives are strategic measures aimed at achieving the nation's ambitious goal of net zero emission (NZE) by 2060. The announcement was made during the Mitra UNRI Exhibition Day (MUED) event held in Riau, Pekanbaru on Wednesday (8/5/2024). The production of blue ammonia is a key component of Indonesia's clean energy strategy. By converting natural gas into syngas and reacting it with nitrogen, the country aims to produce 875 thousand tonnes of ammonia annually. This emission-free process is expected to offer competitive pricing in the market. "The groundbreaking has been conducted by the President. We will produce 875 thousand tonnes of ammonia. The process is emission-free, so we expect the price to be different when it is sold," Dadan Kusdiana explained. Hydrogen technology is another significant focus for Indonesia. Hydrogen offers abundant clean energy with no emissions, making it a promising option for addressing air pollution and meeting future energy demands. Indonesia has established a hydrogen fuel station in Jakarta to study the transportation, storage, and utilization of hydrogen in vehicles, despite the limited number of hydrogen-powered vehicles currently in the country. The government has also made strides in the aviation sector with the successful inaugural flight using SAF J2.4 biofuel, produced from palm kernel oil, on the Jakarta-Solo route. This SAF is a blend of new and renewable energy (NRE) fuel with conventional jet fuel, marking a significant step towards greener aviation practices. 🌱 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧: 2022 𝐯𝐬. 2023 🌱 Our Oleochemical factory in Indonesia has made remarkable progress in energy conservation, recognized by the Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral, Indonesia. Summary: In 2023, we continued our progress, achieving an impressive energy saving of 133,703 GJ vs 73,809 GJ in 2022. 🔍 To put this into perspective: 𝑪𝑶2 𝑬𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑨𝒗𝒐𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒅: The energy savings correspond to approximately 7,507,581 kg of CO2 emissions avoided, based on the average emissions from fossil fuel sources. 𝑬𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒔 🌳: The CO2 emissions avoided would require about 357,504 mature trees to absorb it over the course of a year. 𝑬𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑮𝒂𝒔 𝑬𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔: The savings also equate to avoiding around 18,599,417 kg (or 18,599 metric tons) of CO2-equivalent emissions, considering the global average emission factor for electricity generation, fostering a healthier planet. On 24 November, President Joko Widodo kicked off Indonesia’s first #carbon storage project, the Ubadari carbon capture, utilization, and storage (#CCUS) project. The Ubadari CCUS kickoff followed the inauguration of bp's Tangguh Train III, completed last month for USD 4.8 billion, and has made Tangguh the largest gas-producing facility in Indonesia. Here’s a summary of key details: 📍 Location: Bintuni, West Papua - as one of fifteen Indonesian CCS/CCUS projects in various stages of development, with a combined investment of USD 8 billion 💵 Investment: bp is set to operate the project with an investment of USD 2.6 billion, per an energy ministry statement last September. This figure is yet to be confirmed by the company 🌱 Potential: The facility will potentially store up to 1.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent, equal to the yearly emissions of roughly 380 million passenger cars (per my rough estimation based on Spring Free EV data). Carbon injection to the plant is set to start in 2026 🍲 Food for thought: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported "excessive expectations and reliance on CCUS," in a recent report on the role of oil and gas companies in the #netzero transition. 1 million CO2 has been traded in Indonesia Carbon Exchange (IDX Carbon), one of the use case powered by blockchain developed by ACX Ltd (ACX). Congratulations to my friends and colleagues in PT PLN (Persero) . Singapore based ACX (AirCarbon Exchange) (“ACX”), claims to be the world’s first fully digital carbon trading platform, securitizes CORSIA Eligible carbon credits into CETs (CORSIA Eligible Tokens) for Viridios Capital back in 2019. I am unable to verify if the tokens are running on their own Layer-1 chain, but from quick search, there is a possibility that they have created ERC-20 tokens deployed on Polygon chain (MATIC), which is essentially a L2 project based on Ethereum L1. But what is the real pain point here that warrants to use the Blockchain? Quoting from their website: “By observing the then-existing carbon credit market, we noticed that financial intermediaries dominated carbon credit transactions, forcing sellers to incur large transaction fees, often up to 20-30%. Second, many of the carbon credit marketplaces relied on antiquated technology such as using bulletin boards to market and track carbon credit projects. We set out to eliminate market inefficiencies that required carbon sellers to navigate a multitude of marketing and administrative tasks to post, market, and sell projects. By applying the principles of other commodities markets trading, while leveraging efficient technology underpinnings and establishing consistent pricing benchmarks for carbon credits, we knew we could transform the market. We explored technology innovation and concluded that blockchain was the right digital infrastructure to support an efficient exchange to simplify and secure the trading and settlement process.” Interesting, and worth noting that the founders were approched early on by Singapore government agency - Enterprise Singapore - to develop and launch a Digital Carbon Exchange in 2018. The success story we see today, is the result of those bold and visionary leaders, willing to invest on the right and capable resources to explore uncharted territory. On November 1 2023 at the IIWTT (Indonesia International Waste Treatment Technology) Forum & EXPO at Grand Sahid Jaya Jakarta, PT Radiant Utama Interinsco Tbk, a company that has long been active in the energy services sector, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Clean Power Indonesia, as a provider of innovative solutions in waste and energy management. This collaboration aims to promote small to medium scale Waste to Energy (WtE) solutions for managers of Final Processing Sites (TPA) throughout Indonesia. The Waste to Energy solution is a sustainable approach to dealing with waste problems across the country. By using cutting-edge technology, this solution is able to convert waste into useful energy resources, while helping to reduce environmental impacts and save costs. One example of a Waste to Energy (WtE) project is the project at the Putri Cempo Final Processing Site, Solo. This project will be a pilot of how the Waste to Energy concept on a small to medium scale can be implemented effectively and cost-wise at an affordable cost. In this project, we collaborate with one of the technology market leaders for waste to energy, namely Ankur Scientific from India. From this technology, waste that was previously considered a problem will be transformed into an opportunity to produce sustainable energy with a gasification system. Tunas Group has successfully held the Groundbreaking Ceremony for their latest project, Tunas Prima Industrial Estate (TPIE) on September 19th 2023. In this Groundbreaking Ceremony, Tunas Group signed MOUs with two international companies: Haitai Solar and Professional Testing Services Pte Ltd. Vabella Environmental Partners has made an investment in East Lombok, NTB, for a new sustainability venture. VEP has leased 7H of land to develop a high density biomass grass nursery and collection point for local biomass such as rice husk - preventing this being burnt on the fields. This nursery will serve as the first step for high density biomass farms throughout #indonesia. The biomass will be turned into biochar via pyrolysis, which has many applications including being a regenerative natural fertiliser.
