As the Teaching Year at the University of Westminster comes to an end, my Presidency at the Jewish Society comes to an end as well. To quote Union of Jewish Students (UK and Ireland) President Edward Isaacs: "This was a year like no other'. Indeed, it was a year like no other. While it was overshadowed by the aftermaths of October 7th and the rising antisemitism on campus, we JSOC have done the most events of a JSOC at the University of Westminster since Covid. We also had the largest delegation to a UJS Convention ever. This year as JSoc President has taught me a lot of things: 1. Community Resilience: In the face of adversity, our society's unity was our strength. The challenges we encountered, including a palpable increase in antisemitism, tested our resolve but ultimately brought us closer together. 2. Engagement: Despite hosting a record number of events, we faced challenges with attendance and membership growth. This has prompted a reflection on the possible reasons, including concerns among individuals about publicly identifying as Jewish. Understanding and addressing these fears are crucial for our community's future. 3. Leadership Growth. Leading JSoc has been a profound learning experience, teaching me the importance of adaptability, empathy, and the power of a strong community spirit in overcoming obstacles. 4. Advocacy and Visibility: This year, like no other, highlighted the importance of advocacy and raising awareness about antisemitism, fostering a culture of support and education both within and beyond our community. As my tenure as President and my time as a student at the University of Westminster come to a close, I reflect on this journey with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The trials and triumphs of this past year have not only brought us closer but also reinforced the resilience and spirit of our community. I am particularly grateful for the lessons learned, which have enriched my leadership experience and personal growth. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to each member of JSoc for your dedication and support. Your commitment, especially in challenging times, has been the driving force behind our success. It’s your strength and unity that have truly made a difference. Thank you, once again, for an unforgettable year. It has been an honour to serve as President of the Jewish Society. I would also like to thank the Union of Jewish Students (UK and Ireland) and their teams of Sabbatical officers especially Dora Hirsh and Guy Dabby-Joory, with whom I worked the most time together.
