Today we published our 100% opportunity report, which emphasises that FE and skills must be reformed to meet the economic and social needs of the nation. We set out what a system that serves everyone would look like with six recommendations: 1. A national social partnership body 2. An effective system of devolution 3. A young person's guarantee and demand-led adult funding 4. Mission clarity of schools, colleges, universities 5. Curriculum and qualifications that reflect national and local needs 6. It was great to speak at this Conference last week. Thank you for having me Westminster Forum Projects - some amazing speakers to be alongside! A really interesting movement by Government to broaden access to learning opportunities for adults. But is it going far enough? More to come on the Lifelong Learning Entitlement soon. I do think it is important to know more about it if you are interested in supporting adults re-skill and find positive employment outcomes - just as the Learning People Global are doing for adult learners. #learning #reskilling #upskilling

In less than two years, Alabama has been on a relentless drive to transform education and set its students up for unparalleled success. Starting with widening college access in April 2021, they demonstrated a clear commitment to nurturing the potential of their youth. And they didn't stop there. By January 2022, Alabama rolled out an amendment to the Every Student Succeeds Act, ensuring that every child gets the support and resources tailored to their needs. This was about more than just curriculum; it was about ensuring holistic growth. But the most striking move? By November 2022, they'd put in place requirements ensuring every student is ready not just for college, but for careers too. That's right - by the class of 2026, students will graduate with a clear roadmap for their futures. And just when we thought they might take a breather, they've introduced quality checks on credentials and joined the prestigious NGA Policy Academy, all set to mold the future of youth apprenticeships. In short, Alabama isn't just reacting to educational needs; they're anticipating them. They're not just following best practices; they're setting them. The King's Speech has certainly ignited discussions in the education and employment sectors. Here is a summary of some of what was discussed: 🆕 Advanced British Standard (ABS): Plans to introduce ABS, a qualification merging academic and technical paths to replace A-levels and T Levels, making students future-ready. 📈 Quality Boost: The government is wanting enhance apprenticeships, reduce low-quality degree. 🔜 Long-Term Education Strengthening: The government's commitment to helping young people succeed and thrive, and focusing on long-term education strengthening. The speech also addressed crucial plans for health, social care, climate change, and security. While these are significant steps, there are certainly other areas that might still need attention. Brendan O'Connor, the Minister for Skills and Training, emphasised the importance of achieving the best outcomes for apprentices and trainees to ensure that our economy has the necessary skills. The investigation will assess whether the current system is enhancing the uptake and completion of apprenticeships and traineeships. It will also examine the impact of increasing cost-of-living pressures.
