I was talking to someone the other day who is dating a trust fund baby. As we were talking about different investment types, her boyfriend was incredibly scared to invest in real estate, saying that it was a risky investment. I was puzzled by the statement, as I believe real estate is often much less risky than other asset types. But as I put myself in his shoes, I realized that the wealth he has was not EARNED. Naturally, he is scared to make an investment. Should he lose any money, he has not learned and earned the skill to make it back. Once the money is gone, the money is gone. HOWEVER, if you teach your kids the value of money and how to earn it, they will be self-sufficient whether your leave them an inheritance or not. They will not be scared to invest and if they lose money, they will be confident in their skill to earn back their lost investment. The book Die with Zero makes a good point about helping your kids early on when they need the capital to begin and build their lives, rather than waiting until you die.
