When we’re talking about #sustainability what are we trying to sustain? When #hospitals (or any organization or industry) are so focused on survival, how do they resource and prioritize the #environment— especially when they’re often the largest employers and waste generators in their communities? It’s a tough sell. How are the values, vision, and choices related to community health reconciled with the financial imperative? If the answer is that they’re not mutually exclusive, and that the finances would naturally follow the prioritization of the vision, then four things must be true: 1. The environment is a recognized key stakeholder and equates to community health 2. Community health is not separate from planetary health and thus everyone’s livelihoods and health are connected and impacted e.g. #climate #pandemics 3. Community health is essential for #healthcare and #equity as opposed to sick care and health disparity 4. The environment is thus included in the core operating values and vision… What gets measured gets managed. Q: Is the environment included in your organization’s vision and values? When we point out to leadership their folly, they double down on the latest flavor of the month. 🙈 Often it's time to have the PR department spin 🌀 another nice sounding fairy tale 🧚 for public or regulatory consumption. In improving healthcare, leaders and staff think they are trying to catch the visible monkey. 🐒 👀 But the monkey is an illusion 😵💫 , a symptom of systems dysfunction that can't be caught. Unknown to all ❓ is the fact that they should be working to fix the systems for getting to the monkey, the tree. 🌳 Worse, decades of focusing on the monkey 🙈 🙉 🙊 have made most oblivious to the fact the tree is dying ☠️ , taking patients and staff with it. 🚑 🎱 The first step to real change is leadership acknowledging they don't know what to do.❓ 🎱 The second step is for staff to acknowledge they don't know what to do.❓ 👍 The third step is to train staff 🏥 in systems optimization and turn them loose fixing the tree before it falls over, taking all with it.💡🌍 #3DHealthcare #3DChangeManagement #3DDreamWork #100MillionDreamerProject
