Insightful read from the New York Times about the concerted effort to undermine diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in academia and the workplace. After reading this article, I think we should be careful in framing this as an anti-DEI crusade. Americans are largely in favor of the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. After all, we are a multicultural society, with Gen Z being the most diverse generation in U.S. history. However, the individuals who are waging this billionaire backed campaign, are more than anti-DEI. They are anti-equality. The private communications demonstrate strong views of racism, sexism, homophobia, and a desire to remake the United States into a country where people of color, women, and LGBTQ people are permanently relegated to the bottom rungs of society. Does DEI deserve criticism? Absolutely! DEI practitioners don't always get it right and good intentions don't always equal good results. We should be critical of DEI and how it is implemented in academia and corporate settings. But the answer is not to get rid of it, in fact we need more DEI done right. There is value in acknowledging and celebrating our differences. This is how we become better at collaborating, innovating, and competing in global markets. Corporate America doesn’t hear US! They don’t see US! They hear and see what they want to hear(THEIR stereotype of us)…that is what they need to see and hear in order to marganilize us with gaslighting, sexism/sexual harassment (now white women against Black women), systemic racism, and tone policing. These are the corporate hate crimes that continue to plague corporate America (by design). Black women have been the rich soil of this Earth forever and corporate America wants and needs to silence us with those tactics to exhaust us. Read about my experience with ALL THAT in this book. If you know Nicole, you know she hates hugs. She's an ass out hugger. Touch as little as possible. I'm a no personal space hugger. I will hug you with everything I have. We're very different from one another. Nicole is creative, innovative, a creator, thinker, a tinker-er. I'm financially & risk conservative, I'm tactical. I'm a maker. We work so damn well because we complement each other. We respect the hell out of each other. We trust each other and challenge each other. We leave the egos out the door. We align on a shared goal and have different methods of how we get there. We've struggled and faced so much rejection. We've faced judgment in how we run our business. We've faced personal challenges with growing families. We've personally questioned if it's worth the sacrifices. We were given an opportunity to build something. To break the norms of what companies should look like. We have built a culture where people want to come to work. We've created a place where our clients feel safe. We've created a place where family comes first. We've created a place where we get shit done and have a lot of fun doing it. We've created a place where you can have a social life and drive business results. This is why Nicole and I work. We both believe in breaking the rules. We want to disrupt the way people think about coaching. We want to bring coaching to people who don't have access to it. We want to cultivate more women leaders. We want to see women feel empowered to make their own rules. You can't stop us. And our work is far from over.
