October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). It’s a time to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence and show our support for healthy relationships. Polished Man Event - Taken from Polished man page “We believe everyone should have the chance to live a happy, healthy and safe life. But the reality right now is that 1 in 2 children experience violence each year and 1 in 3 women have experienced violence in their lifetime. The Polished Man campaign encourages everyone to take a stand and actively commit to ending violence against women and children. We ask people to polish up one nail blue for the month of October to raise awareness and funds to support trauma prevention and recovery programs in Australia and overseas. We often get asked “why are you called Polished ‘Man’?”. Men both perpetrate and experience high levels of violence. As carers, leaders and protectors, we believe men have a positive and vital role to play in helping to stop violence against women and children. A world with less violence is a world where men are stepping up, speaking out and taking action to create a safer world for those in it. While we are called “Polished Man”, we encourage EVERYONE to stand together and polish up because we need as many hands (and nails) as we can get to tackle these big issues. EVERYONE can be part of the solution so that we can make sure no woman or child has to live with violence.

This is great to see an agency step up so big to put out the purple ribbon for Domestic Violence awareness month!! NATIONAL STATISTICS On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. Fifty percent of battered women who are employed are harassed at work by their abusive partners. Approximately four million referrals for alleged maltreatment are made to child protective agencies each year. Researchers have estimated that between 3.3 million and 10 million children are exposed to adult domestic violence each year. Domestic violence knows, no socio-economic boundaries. International Men's Day: The theme for 2023 is ''Zero Male Suicide.'' International Men's Day (IMD) is a global awareness day for many issues that men face, including parental alienation, abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence, celebrated annually on November 19. The objectives of celebrating an International Men's Day are set out in 'All the Six Pillars of International Men's Day'.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time when our collective voice becomes a beacon of hope. In this month, we unite against the shadows, acknowledging the harsh reality faced by millions worldwide. Domestic violence respects no boundaries, affecting people regardless of age, gender, race, or social status. This month, let's raise awareness, dispel myths, and support survivors. Awareness is the first step; education is our most potent weapon. By fostering open dialogue, we empower survivors to break the silence. We must provide safe spaces, resources, and avenues for counseling, legal aid, and financial assistance. Breaking the cycle requires active involvement. Volunteer with local shelters, support organizations aiding survivors, and advocate for policy changes. By nurturing empathy and respect, we pave the way for a future free from violence. Let Domestic Violence Awareness Month be a reminder of our collective responsibility.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We’re thankful for the work our partners at Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) and Hope Family Services do in this space. In Sarasota, Manatee, and DeSoto counties, domestic violence ranks among the top reasons children are taken into protective care. Last year alone, nearly 90 children came into our care because of domestic violence. Witnessing domestic violence can leave lasting emotional scars on children. While these experiences may never fade, with the right support, children can learn positive communication skills and become resilient as they grow.
