The idea that sea floor nodule harvesting is some rushed endeavour that lacks scientific rigour or transparency is a huge fallacy. Here is the reality of the process being undertaken, already spanning over a decade. You will find few industries or firms amassing this level of data and subjecting it to detailed scrutiny by stakeholders and regulators. By all means challenge and enhance the data and help improve our collective knowledge. But stop pretending this work isn’t being done.
The Environmental Impact Statement for our NORI-D Project represents the culmination of over a decade of pioneering deep-sea research in collaboration with leading marine institutions and expert industry contractors. In this short video, learn more about the studies that underpin our EIS, how the process differs to projects on land, and how this wealth of data is being shared openly with the regulator and stakeholders.

📜🌳 Katherine Sinacore has already published 17 studies on climate-based solutions that maximize environmental and social benefits. 🗓️ Meet her on May, 24th during our 7th webinar! In december 2023, with Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and 8 other scientists, she published an extremely useful study. The 3 implications of this study were: - A counter-intuitive one: Allowing landowners to harvest and sell some trees can surprisingly incentivize them to protect and manage forests. - A financial one: Flat annual payments ensure a stable income, encouraging more landholders to participate. - A "risk management" one: Shifting the risk to carbon offset buyers is essential. Landowners should receive payment even if tree growth underperforms, while everyone benefits from the ecosystem services provided. ☀️ On May, 24th, she’ll explain this study and many others. 👋 See you there!

I think it’s worth pointing out that the “counter-intuitive” finding of the climate research described below is actually a basic principle of forest economics. This misnomer is a great example of why the NBS industry needs to engage with the forest industry more, rather than imposing solutions from the outside. Doing so would result in much more efficient climate action.
