October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today is the first #CheckYourselfTuesday of October. Checking your breasts/boobs/pecs/chest regularly can help pick up changes that may be a concern. It is important to check regularly so that you know what is “normal” for you. Whether you take part in #CheckYourselfTuesday with us or #CheckThemOnTheFirst - create a reminder for yourself. A non-work post from me today....just wanted to share an experience. Lunchtime mammogram today. Took 10 minutes in total. Whilst talking to the nurse, she explained that only 50% of her appointments turn up at this particular screening centre. Today, there were 49 women booked in for screening, and by lunchtime, I was the 9th to arrive. Looking at national statistics, you see a similar number of around 65-70% attending their screening. When I attended my first mammogram (a few years ago). I was very nervous, having heard many stories about suffering pain and embarrassment during the process. But this really wasn’t my experience. Very caring staff who were sensitive to this old girl. Thank you NHS for an exceptional service. The whole mammogram took only minutes, a little bit of discomfort, but certainly not pain. I appreciate everyone’s experience is different, but for those who may have concerns… and many healthcare providers will acknowledge that anxiety is one of the most common reasons for women putting off routine screening… it really doesn’t have to be scary. For many women, mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Mammograms can usually find lumps two or three years before you or your healthcare provider can feel them. We often talk about the importance of smear tests, but sometimes we might forget about regular booby self care…. This includes guys as well. Let’s get comfortable talking about it. Calling IDFNZ Members and Supporters to be LIFESAVERS Blood, plasma and platelets are critical in helping to save the lives of patients that require these products as part of their treatment. There is no substitute for blood components. When you give blood, you’re giving a priceless gift that can’t be found anywhere else. By choosing to be a blood donor, you’re making a lifesaving difference in communities across New Zealand. IDFNZ members know all too well just how precious blood and plasma can be. PID patients are the biggest users of NZ donated plasma, fractionated into products such as INTRAGAM® P and PRIVIGEN® NZ for IVIG treatment, or EVOGAM® and HIZENTRA® NZ for SCIG treatment. NZBlood is challenged to keep up with a growing demand and is seeking new blood donors to get involved on a regular basis. Team Red Challenge IDFNZ has joined the NZBlood Team Challenge, with its own IDFNZ Team to encourage the community to donate through this avenue. Individual donor statistics are added to the IDFNZ team total, we can share our progress in our newsletter. A Team Challenge is for people who can’t donate together but still want their donations to be linked to an organisation. This is perfect for businesses that have people living in different cities or towns. Any members or supporters who are already blood donors can help by becoming part of the new IDFNZ team effort and asking for their recent, past donations and future donations, to be credited to the IDFNZ team. Donors will be responsible for their own appointments and adding them to the challenge. This will make it easy and smooth for everyone. However, members would like to arrange group donations (e.g workplace colleagues, sports teams etc), we can arrange to help coordinate group bookings. We have two IDFNZ members who have raised their hands to promote the IDFNZ Team Challenge and assist members to become blood donors, Elizabeth Murchison for the South Island and Sean Bridge. We can all help NZBlood, to support patients of the IDFNZ and other patient communities, by encouraging family members, work colleagues, and friends, to become blood or plasma donors by joining the new IDFNZ donor teams. This week I went to give blood - but I very nearly didn't! I've given blood previously, so NHS Blood have my email address, and can easily get in touch with me when supplies are running low. So this is what happened ... The email arrived, I clicked through to the NHS Blood website, and was asked to fill in several details in order to book an appointment - one of those details was my NHS donation number, which was apparently non-negotiable. Funnily enough, I didn't have my NHS Blood donation number handy, so I was left with a choice of abandoning the process or calling them. By some miracle, I had a few minutes to spare and the motivation to call them, but how many people would have abandoned the process at that point? The friction of spending several minutes filling in details, or not having a donation number at hand will undoubtedly cause fewer people to sign up, which is a big problem. Friction is the killer of action - be that physical or mental friction. It got me thinking again about retail media, and the talk Tesco gave at the IAB Retail Media upfronts about having data on 21m of the 28m households in the UK. What NHS Blood could have done, using a data clean room, and Tesco data, is target all previous donors with the right frequency of messaging to maximise sign-ups, and used the Playrcart tech to allow donors to book an appointment directly inside of the ad, without leaving the publisher they were currently enjoying, and in just a few clicks. Our tech can often auto-fill the required fields from cached data, so we offer a checkout experience with minimal friction, which leads to maximum sign-ups. Anyway, if you can, please give blood. NHS Blood are asking for donors to help support their work with platelet transfusions, which can help people with cancer, or people who've lost a lot of blood. #giveblood #friction #advertising #marketing
