People matter. Attitudes matter. This was never more clear than on a recent business trip to AZ. Because of scheduling I flew out on American Airlines and returned on Delta. Same Route. Both planes were similar, the flights were all on time and both legs went smoothly so operationally there was little difference. But there was a NOTICABLE difference in the attitude of the employees. American Airlines employees were downright grumpy, surly and clearly not happy. They didn't want to be there. The Delta employees were doing the same exact job, in the same circumstances but had a smile on their faces and clearly made an effort to make the rigors of flying as friendly as possible. In our business client service is extremely important. Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter took a rare and commendable step by working as a flight attendant for a day. He joined the flight crew as a temporary cabin crew member on a flight from Frankfurt to Riyadh and Bahrain. Ritter said that he wanted to experience the challenges faced by flight attendants firsthand and to better understand the needs of passengers. He also said that he wanted to show his appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the Lufthansa cabin crew. I believe that such initiatives can help managers make better decisions by giving them a real sense of customer interaction and the challenges faced by front-line or operational-level employees. It is an example of servant leadership, which is a leadership style that focuses on serving others and putting the needs of employees and customers first. Not to mention the positive impact that this can have on the morale of his team, as they will know that their boss appreciates their hard work and understands the challenges they face. This can help to build trust and respect between the CEO and the employees. I am sure that he will make different decisions in the office from now on. #leadership #airtransport #lufthansa

American Airlines Pilot saves a 9-year-old little girl's heart. Douglas Vandergraph continues his journey of teaching others how to accomplish their dreams and goals by talking about an American Airlines pilot named James Danen, who flies regularly between Dallas-Fort Worth and various destinations in Asia, and who came to the rescue of a 9-year-old girl who had lost her beloved American Girl doll, named Beatrice--a gift from her grandmother, in fact, which made it extra-special. Douglas thinks there's something else to take away from this story, especially if you're a business leader. It has to do with hiring, building culture, and creating an amazing company. Douglas is putting himself out there as an example to others so they can see how anyone can take a chance, improve daily, and make a difference in the lives of others. I just completed United’s Captain course. Designed for all first-time captains at the airline, the course includes four full days of classes on leadership, communication, resource management and much more, interspersed with meetings with company leaders and managers in other work groups. This far exceeds the FAA-mandated requirement for professional development, and arguably is the best in the industry. My personal opinion was that this was absolutely excellent thoughout each class and meeting. There was no “kool-aid,” just genuine pride in our legacy and excitement for our future. Thank you CEO Scott Kirby, VP of Flight Ops Marc Champion, VP of Flight Ops Planning and Development Kirk Limacher, MD of Flight Training Miles Morgan and MD of Flight Standards Robert Thomas. It was particularly noteworthy that every single leader emphasized #safety as our priority. Being a United Captain brings many privileges, but also significant responsibility to be safe above all else. I remember when former SVP of Flight Ops Bryan Quigley told me of his plans to develop a professional development course similar to those he and I had experienced in our military careers. Now, every pilot enjoys that training, which includes a lot of the same excellent instruction that is in the Captain course. Fun fact, did you know United was the first airline to develop and implement #CRM? Every organization should be so fortunate as to have leaders who know what’s important (safety and people), how to develop employees, and how to set the foundation for a healthy culture to thrive. I’m proud to be part of United Airlines, and no, it’s not the “kool-aid.” The simple fact is that United is poised to be the biggest and best airline in the world. “You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader”! During my recent 14-hour transatlantic flight with a national carrier, I witnessed remarkable leadership skills and service levels in action, courtesy of flight attendant Tenzin. In the section of the aircraft where I sat, more than half of the passengers were elderly, several arrived in wheelchairs, including my 80-year-old mother. Tenzin displayed extraordinary patience and compassion, tending to even the smallest and most unconventional requests from these elderly passengers. Whether it was helping them fasten their seat belts, warming up home-cooked meals in the microwave, or offering reassurance to anxious seniors, she handled each situation with grace and empathy. Throughout the entire flight, Tenzin maintained a high level of service and empathy towards the elderly passengers, while marshalling and supporting her junior crew members. Intrigued by her dedication, I asked Tenzin how she managed to accommodate these requests when it might have been easier to say no. Her response was profound: "When I go to sleep at night, I want to rest easy knowing I did everything I could to assist my passengers. Every day, I find happiness in knowing I gave my best." When I asked her about the possibility of passengers not appreciating her efforts or taking her service for granted, she calmly replied, "Yes, I know that happens. But I'm not concerned about that. What matters most to me is that I know I provided the best service I could." Tenzin attributed her selflessness to her upbringing and her family's strong values of service to others. She might not be the CEO of this national carrier, but leaders in the field like Tenzin, who exceed their duties with selflessness and compassion, deserve recognition. They remind us that true leadership is about actions and character, transcending mere titles.
