Post the Jet Airways cease, many highly experienced Crew joined Vistara and had to start from basics even if they were hired as Cabin Seniors. That was exactly when we - the 'Organic Vistarians'(a new term that emerged at that time) found ourselves in many difficult scenarios. Despite being less industry experienced but having more of the Airline experience, there were often ego clashes. Or the ultimate wars of fighting over the SOPs. And we all know, how 'COPs' and 'SOPs' never go hand-in-hand. 😉 Every industry faces such situations. Where, despite being hired for senior/leadership positions, one can face backlash from the junior purely because of their experience 'with' the company. There were many instances when even I had clashes of opinions to the point of escalations. But few things I learnt from all those situations were: -Respect the experience, but stand firm on your claims (talk with facts). -Never argue. If it gets really bad, get management(or some senior) involved for conflict resolution. -Never try to demean and brag extensively about your experience with the company. Also, some tips for the other side, include: -Respect the one with more company experience as they know the culture better and will really help in future. -Give it sometime. Trust their actions more than words. If the junior can prove the point with their work, trust it. You will gain a lifetime of friend. -If found incorrect, never hesitate to apologise(even if politely), this will really raise the bar for them and they will respect you forever for your courage. So many times I came across such situations and always and always came out better. Remember, Leadership is not a skill, but a mindset. #leadership #cabincrew #corporatewisdom

🎉 My #HSR "Health & Safety Representative" journey, years 2018 to 2024 at Airways New Zealand and Airways International Ltd (AIL), saw us through the pandemic and many more. 💘 A special thanks to our #Airways "Safety and Assurance" team for their leadership, advisements, mentorship and koha - Kim Nichols, Shelly Sydney, Becca Hughes, Greer Alsop, Jody Henry over the years. Thank you for looking after HSRs across the country, so we in turn, can look after our teams effectively. And to my colleagues who have trusted in me for my care over the many years, thank you. (I'm going to miss the yearly Christmas chocolates.) 🚶♂️ Stepping down this year, I've taken that notch up from being a HSR into #Coaching, where the same values apply. Here I am, playing a more active part in the workforce offering my skillsets, directly influenced by my role as a HSR to make the world a better place. 🌍 I recall in my 2023 Airways H&S Conference trip report, reflections I've written/referenced: ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ "Attitude is everything! The longer we live, the more we realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, physical strength or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change the past; we can only affect the future. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is decide what our attitude will be. Life is 10% what happens to us, and 90% how we react to it. Our attitude is the most vulnerable part of our existence – it is also the only part of our existence over which we have total control. What happens when your passion and purpose align? This week, I spent some time working with the wellbeing team at British Airways. As many of my friends will know, flying (and anything to do with aviation) has always been a passion of mine. Having spent many of my early years completely fascinated by how these HUGE aircraft could take off AND stay in the air, I fulfilled my childhood dream and obtained my private pilot’s license last year. This week reminded me of some valuable insights which I wanted to share… As I walked into the British Airways HQ, I noticed a sign: “To fly. To serve.” Passion and Purpose aligned. So, what does academic research tell us about meaning and purpose at work? - Employees are 77% more likely to be engaged at work and report an 87% higher intent to stay when meaning and purpose are activated and aligned. - Purpose-oriented companies achieve 30% higher levels of innovation. - 83% of companies that over-perform on revenue growth link everything they do to purpose. Finding alignment between what you love and do is not always easy, but it can be incredibly rewarding. It's about more than just a paycheck – feeling fulfilled, making a difference, and being part of something larger than yourself are some of the most basic benefits. The list goes on. In my capacity with Front and Centre Training Solutions , along with our work in the leadership and coaching space.. we work with many organisations on their client experience and customer facing capabilities. Like many in my network and beyond, I am currently travelling domestically every week, as well as some intermittent trips to the region. I know.. first world problems but also feel if you pay for a service, you should actually get some! I have been a loyal Qantas platinum member for years. As I type this, I’m sitting on hold for 50 make that 51 mins and counting, calling them back as requested after them cancelling my flight to Sydney next week. Qantas requested I call them, so I have. The message on repeat “as a platinum frequent flier, you can enjoy a range of exclusive benefits blah blah” . I’ve counted now. I’ve heard this 26 times this call. Range of exclusive benefits.. EXCEPT ANYONE who can answer the phone on a call Qantas requested! Has there ever been a brand fall from grace this far? Or a service offering so far from what is advertised?? I know a lot has been said about it recently, but I can’t think of one? So I’ve got a genuine question to my network that travel regularly domestically in Aus. Should transfer status and points over to Virgin? Or is that experience currently just as bad? I honestly would like to know. Thanks in anticipation. Rant over. Working in the aviation industry was a dream come true. The functional and operational aspects were easy because of the regulations, standards, procedures and processes. The human interactions on the hand, some days were fun and easy, other days, tough, and very tough I might add, flight delays, cancellations, this is not unusual in airline operations.  Observing daily life at the airport and mingling with so many people was what was so fascinating to me. Everyday was different. From the very best of moments, the cultural diversity, hearing people tell me about their reasons for travel, watching the excitement of people seeing each other after many years, the anxiety of first time travelers, the confidence of frequent flyers to the very very worst, handling an aircraft crash. Being aware and watching life unfolding around me gave my job purpose and meaning. I understood that being good at my job was not about receiving praise from superiors, but more about my contribution and participation in turning moments into memories for every customer I interacted with . For me, it was more than just "reporting to work", it was more about "how may I serve" As we go about our normal life, job, family, school, sometimes we get so wrapped up in routines and patterns that we forget to notice the loveliness and the beauty of life. Sometimes this beauty is found in the things that we ignore the most. As you begin a new year choose to be intentional by awakening to the symphony of life. It is a beautiful life in front of you and if you are “asleep” it will pass you by. ✨ Happy New Year to you all. ✨  

I was flying 🛫 today's morning flight ✈️ to Frankfurt and having recent discussions about diversity on our #EYawayDay, and I have to say that Lufthansa is a perfect example. The cabin crew 👩✈️👨✈️ was stuffed with males and women - which is obvious :) But also there was a wide range of age differences between the staff. All crew 🙋♂️🙋♀️was amiable, supportive, and open to resolving any difficulties, from very obvious, like people blocking the aisle too long via difficulties fitting the luggage 🧳 into the overhead compartment, ending the challenging discussion 👫with a few passengers not willing to change their seat for various reasons. 📝The conclusion from my observations:📝 What I have to say is that the younger 👧 crew required more time to resolve it and manage the situation, vs. more mature 🧓 members showing more empathy immediately and trying to understand where the frustration 🤬 is coming from. ✒️ What is the punchline? 🖋️ The majority of our work requires a team effort to complete it. The more diverse 👨👩👦👦 the team, the better we could fit into various roles. Each of us has strengths and is most probably different. We must build on those versus struggling with weaknesses and trying to fix them. pointless.

60 Seconds With … Mirjam Scherer 🚀 Meet Mirjam Scherer, the Global Head of Specials Logistics at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, has garnered more than 15 years of experience across sales, management and cargo logistics. Having joined KLM in 2002, prior to its merger with Air France, she has worked in a number of roles on both the passenger and cargo side of operations. ✈ How did you get into the air freight industry? It was kind of a coincidence because my background is in hotel management. However, I have always loved the KLM brand, so I applied for a job at KLM because of the international environment. While working for KLM, I used to ride horses as I was really a horse girl when I was young. Then, in 2007, I saw a job posting for a sales manager for live horses and thought, "Well, that combines my commercial competences with my personal interest in horses." I applied for the job and was hired, and since then, I have mostly been in air cargo, of which 7 years involved in the transportation of live animals. ✈ If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To let people truly listen to each other. Many people tend to speak without really hearing what others have to say. Better listening would lead to better understanding, and I think that would help a lot. ✈ If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would it be and why? I'm always intrigued by Obama, so I would like to have dinner with him. I don't really tend to look up to people; I just get inspired by them. Next would be Albert Plesman, the founder of KLM, because it was quite bold to start an airline back then. And then, I think, Nelson Mandela, no explanation needed. ✈  What's the best piece of advice you've ever received? Stay true to yourself.
