What Good Looks Like in Government Efforts to Crowd In Investment in Critical Technologies. Malaysia. Not without its own set of challenges and historic missteps, Malaysia is already the world’s sixth largest semiconductor exporter, and set to benefit from two mega-trends - AI and Localisation / Deglobalisation (from the obvious geo-politics). Before our Australia eyes get dismissive: Malaysia is in top 30 Countries in the world for economic complexity, many, many, many rungs above Australia. I suspect there’d be a benefit to those with Australian purse strings and policy pens in understanding Malaysia better and especially their new approach to public investment for critical technologies. I recently took part in a tour of Penang and the various chip manufacturers located there. I was there for 2 days and barely scratched the surface - there is so much to see. It’s like Shenzhen and Macau in the early 2000s in terms of the scale of build out.  I was privileged to present to a wonderful session with 50 representatives from Malaysia's sovereign wealth funds, Petronas, and other corporates. These people had been coaching around the region for 3 days. Factory by factory, plant by plant, CEO by CEO, listening and learning. No photo ops for Ministers in white coats, either.  I was a small part of their last session. I was expecting to receive tired eyes and lots of heads down in personal phone screens.  Nope. Amazing listening and genuine care and attention. They are genuinely trying to solve issues for their Nation: how can we marshal our public capital and corporate resources to assist the exisiting players get up the value chain. Chip Manufacturing doesn’t seem to get much attention in DFAT’s Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040. Perhaps we need to understand better the value chain for the AI mega trend, at least to the extent our neighbours seem willing and engaged to do. #australianinnovation #sovereigncapability #modernmanufacturing #sovereign #advancedmanufacturing #chips #venturecapital #deeptech
