In collaboration with Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA), Building and Construction Authority, Housing & Development Board, Surbana Jurong Group and Ministry of National Development Singapore we have identified significant synergies and benefits in storing construction aggregates in underground caverns. This initiative not only liberates surface space but also mitigates environmental impacts by relocating activities underground. A recent trip hosted to Norway and Finland yielded valuable insights for the development of Gali Batu Cavern (GBC) as a sustainable underground facility. The team learned about advancements in #automation, electrification, and responsible mining practices that can be integrated into GBC's operations. Here are some of the key takeways: 💡 Focus on Automation and Electrification: There was a rising trend towards automation, digitalisation, and the use of electric mining equipment. While these advancements offer potential for enhanced safety, productivity, and reduced carbon footprint, thorough cost-benefit analyses will help to determine the optimal level of automation and electrification for GBC. 📉 Optimising Energy Efficiency: Gravity can be utilised to generate electricity, significantly reducing operational costs. This innovative approach to energy use can be explored for Singapore’s underground operations. ♻ Exploring Repurposing Opportunities: Inspired by examples encountered during the trip, such as water storage and carbon sequestration, this forward-thinking approach for responsible land use will be adopted at GBC. The knowledge gained will be instrumental in creating an underground facility that aligns with Singapore's vision for a sustainable and innovative built environment. Many thanks to the Työ- ja elinkeinoministeriö – Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (Finland) and Norwegian Directorate of Mining at Trondheim for hosting us! #BuildingIndustries #Innovation #Sustainability Direktoratet for mineralforvaltning med Bergmesteren for Svalbard Gian Jian Xiang Ng Jia Yi Jaycee Chen Seow Ling Sheng, Aaron Wong Wei Loong Melvin Lim Melvin Ng Brian Koh Brian Koh Wong Wei Loong
