1&1 Telecommunication SE CEO Outsmarts Telefónica with strategic move to Vodafone 1&1, the fourth largest mobile operator in Germany, has announced that it will be moving its 12 million customers to the Vodafone network by October 2024. The move comes as a surprise to many, as 1&1 has been a long-time partner of O2 Telefónica. There are a few reasons why 1&1 may have made this decision. First, Vodafone has a larger and more reliable network than O2. Second, Vodafone is investing more heavily in 5G than O2. Third, 1&1 may be hoping to improve its margins by moving to another network cleverly leveraging competition even in an Oligopoly. The move is a major blow to O2, which will lose a significant number of customers. It is also likely to lead to increased competition as O2 will seek to fill the overcapacity with an attractive offering. Who will be the long term winner 🏆 of this move in your view?

About telco consolidation around Europe, there are news...and NEWS! And the title of the article below is really amazing: "Vodafone lines up Italy escape, taking €8bn in Fastweb cash". Why is that? Because, despite Swisscom is giving Vodafone Italy an enterprise value of €8bn, definitely under the €10.45bn valuation in the Iliad offer, this is totally cash. Looks really a cash and a quick, clean exit from the italian market, as the title clearly states. Swisscom is aiming for 100% of the British Group's Italian assets, not a JV then but a real merger with “advanced exclusive negotiations”. In a Vodafone statement we can read: "Vodafone has engaged extensively with several parties to explore market consolidation in Italy and believes this potential transaction delivers the best combination of value creation, upfront cash proceeds and transaction certainty for Vodafone shareholders." All the best then to the new telco giant in the process to be born! Let's read.
