Here at the Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office, we are focused on supporting 100% of #odu students and their internship journey. How do they persist in their internship? Do they have reliable transportation? Stable Housing? Money for gas or a bus pass? How do we help student athletes who might have very busy training schedules? How do we help our online students to prepare for a virtual or hybrid #internship? The benefits of having an internship while in undergrad is clear, but inequities exist in who is able to complete one, especially a paid internship. I agree with the author that "we owe it to current and future generations to remove the remaining barriers to entry and make interning an experience every student who wants it can have." #CareerCoaching #Internship

In the report, From College to Career: Students’ Internship Expectations and Experiences, we found strong associations between work-based learning generally — and #PaidInternships specifically — and positive individual outcomes in the labor market after graduation. However, there continues to be gaps in access to internships. 🎒 Seventy percent (70%) of first-year students expect to have internship experiences, yet fewer than half of seniors report that they have had one. ✏️ Interest and participation in internships varies by field of study, yet substantial gaps between interest and participation levels exist across all fields. 💬 Students who participated in internships are more confident in their ability to communicate their skills and experiences to potential employers than those who have not participated in internships. Gallup study found that 4 in 10 college students complete an internship during college while only about 1 in 4 first generation college students had an internship in college. Reasons cited for those who didn't secure an internship--it's too difficult or needed a better paying job. While I personally can't solve the problem of unpaid internships or competitive recruiting processes at name brand companies, there are viable alternatives to traditional internships that offer high value to students. Below are a few of those solutions. 📚On-campus part-time roles that build transferable skills while compensating students for their time and talent. ⚙️Upskilling on platforms like Udemy that offer training on a myriad of topics pertaining to one's career goals. Often free or low-cost and offer completion certifications. 💼 Micro-internships which are paid, project-based work from platforms like Parker Dewey that connect college students with non-profit or for-profit employers. 💬What others should be on the list?

I've always been passionate about internships & the career pathways they've opened up to emerging leaders. As a creator of a few internship programs with District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and Georgetown University School of Medicine and a curriculum designer for a career accelerator pilot the first year of Braven (formerly Beyondz), I know that equitable opportunity is key. Higher ed can and must do more to ensure increased access, create more engaging opportunities and remove costly barriers that prevent all students from landing these crucial life-changing learning opportunities. This recent survey from Gallup sheds more light on internships as an essential component of student success: -Three in 10 bachelor’s students who have not had an internship cite the difficulty in obtaining one as their primary barrier. -20% say they cannot afford to have one -Reports of internship participation are lower among first-generation college students whose parents have not completed a degree (27%) and among students enrolled at public colleges and universities (36%) compared with their counterparts. Summer's over and the ubiquitous summer #internship season has ended. But who really has access to these hands-on, career-connected opportunities? Gallup recently reported only 41% of students have an internship experience before graduation - and it's particularly alarming for #firstgeneration students with just 27%. Why? Most reported it's hard to find an internship (competition, costs associated, field of interest) even in today's digital age. With #employers reporting the need for real-world workforce readiness before graduation in human talent, we need to create better #access for today's learners to internships as well as other opportunities to gain skills: bootcamps, microinternships, short-term immersive programs, project-based learning and more. That's why The Washington Center is committed to providing flexible, immersive pathways to better prepare our #diverse learners with experiential learning in modalities that work for them, work for employers and work with #highereducation partners.
