Sometimes a race isn’t just a competition – it’s also a high-speed test lab for Ford Performance engineers. The team is headed back to “America’s Mountain” in June to help advance the company’s research and development of electric powertrains as Ford’s F-150 Lightning SuperTruck takes part in the 102nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb brought to you by Gran Turismo. As the name suggests, the new EV demonstrator is based on Ford’s best-selling electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning, but the Ford Performance team will be ratcheting up the vehicles’ aerodynamics and power output to take on the daunting 12.5-mile uphill excursion. This is the second consecutive year Ford has taken an electric test vehicle to the competition at Pikes Peak. Ford’s 1,400-horsepower Electric SuperVan 4.2, based on Ford Pro’s E-Transit Custom Van, set a class record en route to a class victory there in 2023. And it’s not just happening at Pikes Peak. Ford Performance is also learning from another pair of electric demonstration race vehicles. The Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 and Mustang Mach-E 1400 do not meet regulations to run in events endorsed by racing’s sanctioning bodies, but they are helping our engineers learn about areas like battery cell chemistry, and heat generation and cooling. When we think of hybrid vehicles, performance isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. They're usually associated with efficiency, and saving the driver money at the pump. However, many racing series have proven that they can be just as much of a performance boost as an efficiency boost. The first signs of hybrid powertrain in racing were in 1998, when the Panoz Q9 paired a 110Kw electric powertrain to a 6L v8 engine. While this did show proof of concept, the limited battery technology caused the vehicle to be too heavy and not competitive. Skip to modern era however, battery technology has progressed to the point that manufactures can reap the benefits of an electric motor at lower speeds while keeping the vehicle at a competitive weight. In the GTP Prototype class, racing teams are able to use a Bosch MGU unit in between the engine and transaxle. These unit are limit to around 40 hp at places like Daytona but can be raised higher at other tracks. This motor is powered by a 1.35 kWh battery that produces 800 volts. The engine and motor combined cannot exceed 671 hp to the rear wheels, and is regulated through the use of torque sensors and engine/motor management. Since 2022, WRC introduced guidelines allowing 100Kw battery to be paired with a 1.6L engine. This system can provide up to 500 hp in certain areas of the circuit. While these systems are primarily in road racing applications, the technology is starting to bleed into other forms of racing as well. This technology not only benefits racing teams, but can also trickle down into everyday vehicles as well.
