ARPA-E Fellow Dr. Julia Greenwald spoke at the House of Sweden’s 2023 Nobel Laureate Gala Dinner. The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Moungi Bawendi of MIT, Louis Brus of Columbia and Aleksey Yekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.” This discovery was foundational to advancing the field of nanotechnology. Dr. Greenwald, whose graduate work in the Columbia Chemistry Department investigated a related class of nanomaterials, addressed the impact of their work. Dr. Bawendi was present at the Gala as were the two American Laureates who won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. ARPA-E Senior Advisor Alex Bok also represented the Agency at the dinner.

What are quantum dots ? Quantum dots are particles which are smaller in size (nanometers in size) and its properties can be altered by changing it's size. It is noted that the structure and atomic composition are similar to that of bulk materials. Well, it has a wide range of applications in the near future namely: 1. Lightweight computer monitors and TV screens 2. Mapping of biological tissues by biochemists 3. Used in photovoltaic cells to improve the absorption and efficiency in converting solar light into electricity. 4. One of the potential applications of quantum dots (QDs) is in quantum computing, owing to the capability to control single electron spins isolated within the QD. Quantum dots (QDs) represent a promising solid-state system for creating such hardware. It has already been demonstrated that QDs possess the ability for long coherence times, high-fidelity spin readout, and the realization of one- and two-qubit gates. Additionally, quantum dots have potential applications in nanoplasmonics and nanoelectronics. Congratulations to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Exciting news! The Nobel Prize for Chemistry this year has been awarded for the synthesis of quantum dots - the tiny semiconductors material (several thousands of times thinner than a human hair) that are revolutionizing advanced electronics and optoelectronics. My PhD research focused on unveiling the incredible properties of quantum dots. This fascinating world of quantum dots that is still largely unexplored.
