BRAVE Southeast Asia Tech Podcast: $1.5 Trillion USD Green Investment Gap, Competition vs. China Industrial Policy and Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Viability with Gita Sjahrir - E413 Gita Sjahrir-Wright, Head of Investment at BNI Ventures, and Jeremy Au 区汉辉 talked about three main themes: 1. $1.5 Trillion USD Green Investment Gap: Jeremy and Gita agreed with Bain & Company’s report that Southeast Asia is "woefully off track" on green investments to reduce emissions and needs new policies and financial mechanisms to help bridge the gap. They discussed the significant costs associated with transitioning to green energy, e.g. retiring a single coal-fired power plant would cost over several hundred million dollars. They discussed Indonesia's ambitious goal and challenging execution to shift to a zero-carbon electricity grid by 2060, serving a population with a current GDP per capita of around $5,000 USD. They also discussed how high interest rates negatively impact renewable energy investments, vs. the prior era of zero interest rate policy (ZIRP). 2. Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Viability: Southeast Asia is the 7th largest automotive manufacturing hub globally, producing approximately 3.5 million vehicles in 2021, led by Thailand (1.6 million vehicles), followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. They debated the feasibility of transitioning these capabilities to EV manufacturing, noting the significant challenges in creating a fully functional EV manufacturing ecosystem. They also touched on Indonesia's strategy to leverage their asset of having the world's largest nickel reserves to foster a complete battery supply chain. 3. Competition vs. China Industrial Policy: Jeremy and Gita covered China's formidable manufacturing policy stack (land rights, subsidies, education, worker rights, currency) for their nexus of steel, solar, nuclear, manufacturing, semiconductor and EV industries. They discussed the new Chinese approach to export not just goods, but also their manufacturing value chains, into Southeast Asian markets, and the appropriate competition vs. partnership by local manufacturers. They also debated how startups like Sleek and Dat Bike should position themselves strategically in terms of production vs. sales vs. fundraising. Jeremy and Gita also talked about public health benefits from decreased air pollution, upcoming market consolidation in the EV industry, and the necessity of a multi-decade policy approach in solving sustainable energy transition challenges. Last week we hosted at BBVA the first meeting of the Cleantech for Iberia coalition to set our priorities and action plan for 2024 Cleantech for Iberia brings together cleantech companies, investors and policy makers to boost the potential of Spain and Portugal as a clean energy hub in the European Union. "As BBVA we are convinced that Spain & Portugal can become industrial and climate leaders. To achieve that we need to get the right enabling environment to attract public and private capital and enhance the promising EU Net Zero Industry Act that is being negotiated". The Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) sets the goal of manufacturing at least 40% of the EU’s annual deployment needs of strategic clean technologies: solar, wind, batteries and storage, heat pumps and geothermal energy, electrolyzers and fuel cells, biogas/biomethane, carbon capture, utilization and storage, and grid technologies by 2030. Expanding the list has been a key request from the European Parliament in ongoing negotiations with the Council of the EU. I strongly recommend the latest report from Cleantech for Europe and supported by Breakthrough Energy : A Cleantech Investment Plan for European Competitiveness. https://lnkd.in/dX6df8sf https://lnkd.in/dCPD7F8S It provides a clear assessment of the challenges to close the €50 bn investment gap in clean tech and specific proposals: ✅ Step 1: Unleash institutional capital to create a step-change in EU cleantech investment. EU pension funds in 2021 invested less than 0.018% of their total assets in venture funds, while in the US public pension funds invested 1.9% of their assets in venture funds. Cleantech for Europe’s plan includes reviewing prudential rules to make it easier for institutional investors to fund the cleantech revolution and developing the de-risking instruments and fund-of-funds to crowd in private capital. ✅ Step 2: Mobilise public guarantees to catalyse private investment. Because of their lower bankability compared to industrial incumbents, innovators are not able to finance these guarantees at a reasonable cost. ✅ Step 3: Mobilise revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) to scale up cleantech manufacturing. One significant – and growing – pool of capital the EU could leverage further is ETS revenues. In particular, our Plan recommends the Innovation Fund is made more accessible to cleantech companies. We also recommend Member States invest 25% of their ETS revenues into cleantech manufacturing. 🌏 𝐈𝐧 2050 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 🌏 I am deeply grateful to ESG Summit Europe and Óscar Delgado Barrientos for taking a glimpse on the cleantech state of play and our work at Cleantech for Iberia in this interview. I've much enjoyed sharing insights on the work of coalition members like FertigHy and other topics like: 🏭 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 in Europe, which is shifting. The current trend towards deindustrialization in Germany contrasts the reindustrialization potential in the Iberian Peninsula, which is already a superpower in clean energy, has progressive targes fueling cleantech growth, an emerging hydrogen ecosystem and a well-developed industrial base. 🌎 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 as a non-stop battle. The cost of action – roughly 5% of the global GDP – is much lower than the cost of inaction. Meaningful action requires policymakers, big financial institutions and corporate executives to innovate and align with the speed and scale that is proportionate to the crisis we are facing. 🤳 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 #𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 is cross-sectorial and working in siloes is simply not an option anymore. ❓𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞 for our cleantech #industry. We now need to double-down and boldly support our home-grown cleantech innovators. In a more and more defensive global economy, for companies to truly benefit from their home market, stay competitive and lead the clean transition, we need #regulation which is fit-for-purpose . 📄 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 #𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨 for the 2024 EU elections. Our coalition unties the voices of leading investors, innovators, universities, incubators, banks, NGOs and policymakers supporting cleantech as the solution to the current confluence of crises. We view our cleantech strengths as our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reindustrialize Spain and Portugal, leveraging durable jobs, massive investments, placing citizen well-being in the driver’s seat. 📊 𝐄𝐔 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 #𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 is a crucial milestone in Europe’s energy transition. BBVA has joined the Cleantech for Iberia initiative to accelerate the development of clean technologies in Spain and Portugal. The main goal is to create a global hub that establishes the Iberian Peninsula as a leader in the 'cleantech' sector. The initiative brings together funds totaling more than one billion euros. The coalition promoted by the Cleantech Group Cleantech Group and Breakthrough Energy was presented today, during the Web Summit in Lisbon. BBVA is the only bank on the peninsula that is participating in 'Cleantech for Iberia'. Climate funds (Net Zero Ventures, Klima, A&G, Axon and Adara, among others) and companies in the region that have invested in clean technologies (Malta, H2 Green Steel, Plastic Energy, among others) are participating in this initiative.
