Last week McKinsey & Company released an article (In digital and AI transformations, start with the problem, not the technology) https://lnkd.in/dijAfAwB that is based on an interview with the author of the book Rewired (https://lnkd.in/dCSDv5ty) by Eric Lamarre. I shared the article in a group of CIO, CTO, CDO, CISOs with my view that while #CIO has been vocal about the fact "Start with the business problem and not technology", at least when McKinsey says the same, #Board would probably give it more weightage; this kicked off a big debate. What was the discussion about ? To begin with, while everyone agreed with the headline, there were alternative views on the rest of the article as well as on #Big4 consultants and their recommendations. Key among the points raised were: 1. A consultant view is quite often far removed from a practitioners view (exceptions being the consultants who were former CIOs, now working with the consulting companies). Thus the recommendations sound good on paper but difficult to implement 2. Most reports are copy/paste from previous ones of quality defined above and rarely align to the specifics of the organization. Thus after spending large amounts, the customer is still struggling to implement 3. Rookie MBAs work on the ground with an attitude "I know everything" and end up asking obvious and stupid questions frustrating their client CXOs who don't have time or patience to teach the freshers 4. The answers they get from the questions above are replayed in fancy words with no real analysis or value add; industry experts add generic public knowledge about the current/future state and then attempt to set the report in context 5. The CXO who hired the consultant sometimes influences the end recommendation to suit what they want to do and CYA that the big name consultant recommended this course of action My view: over my corporate experience of more than 3 decades I was subjected to all kinds of engagements with the #Big5 and now #Big4 for various initiatives. I cannot say that their reports offered any major insights that I did not have or course of action that I did not envisage. In fact many a times the strategy and plan was as naïve as the consultant who interviewed me. What has been your experience, do comment

I had an incredibly insightful conversation today with a former colleague who is currently leading a global sales organization in the EMA region. We both agreed that the implementation of new AI technologies has the potential to significantly reduce the scope of seller responsibilities. However, this can only happen if sales leaders are willing to treat this technology as a full-fledged member of the sales team, rather than a mere tool for salespeople. We strongly believe that it requires a fundamental shift in the mindset of the sales organization and how sales leaders approach this new technology.
