So true. It's not always obvious who is struggling.
One human instinct is to "fit in" and for some that means we get used to wearing a mask when we don't fit "the norm". We hide or true selves in shame.
In order to hide behind the mask we often over compensate. Being scared can show up as being aggressive. Low self-esteem can show up as overconfidence. I've met people who I thought were really strong willed and confident, only to find out underneath they are quite the opposite.
Wearing a mask uses mental energy and is tiring. As someone who was bullied at primary school I created the persona "Jacko". Instead of being geeky, studious and shy. I became louder, brasher and more rebellious. I somehow managed to wear one from about 10 years old to probably somewhere in my thirties. I don't know how I did it. Very few people know this about me.
The final trigger for me to take off the mask was going to a therapist, as I struggled running a company and going through a divorce (my fault - I cheated).
Almost 20 years on I've pretty much accepted who I am and my many imperfections. I don't strive to be perfect and I'm not as materialistic as the younger me.
Everyone has their own path to follow and with social media and influencers the inclination to wear a mask is stronger than ever.
My few words of advice (ignore if you wish, I'm not sone guru or expert) is be brave, take off your mask, learn to live with who you are now and realise you can change how you are in the future.
As a business leader, vulnerability, authenticity, compassion are great strengths.
Remember, people wear masks. We don't know what's going b on behind the mask unless we ask. And even then, we might need to ask more than one until the person is ready to reveal their true self.
