With the PR landscape undeniably shifting towards a "pay to play" model, reflecting the financial challenges encountered by publications of all sizes, we need to rethink traditional approaches. 🤔 In my view, the road to success lies in the strategic blend of earned media (crucial for bolstering brand reputation, validation, and acquiring valuable coverage and backlinks) and advertising placements (essential for expanding reach/awareness and fostering relationships with key publications). Using inventive methods 💡 to engage the media, exploring diverse channels 🚗 for generating media attention/coverage, and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships 🤝 with influential media titles will serve as important tactics for cutting through the noise of a constantly churning 24/7 news cycle dictated by "pay to play" rules. When is an exclusive appropriate? An exclusive strategy simply doesn’t hold the weight most believe, or even that it once did. Used so often that it’s become a dime a dozen, it’s usually the first idea I hear from comms professionals when a corporate announcement is in the pipeline. In some instances, an exclusive offers the best strategic option. Some outlets pride themselves on their exclusive coverage, and will highlight that coverage accordingly (also giving preference to exclusive stories). But exclusives should not be the default, and certainly are not appropriate for every situation.

Savvy journalists in smaller editorial teams with strained resources are finding workarounds for discovering innovative companies and experts using Substack, AI-powered platforms where journalists are matched with sources and products to review, and real-time feeds that you can plug into Slack. As the new year gets underway, here are my five new year’s resolutions for law firm PR and marketing teams which will help ensure some great media coverage in 2024. 🤝 Forge relationships with target journalists, directory researchers and podcast hosts. My experience as a specialist legal PR has found that building genuine connections at your target titles is the best way to secure regular, high profile media coverage. 🤖 Embrace AI - there are some great innovations out there and AI can drive efficiencies and save you time. For example, stuck for a catchy title for a blog or press release? ChatGBT may well be your answer. 🎓 Invest in your own personal development. While your firm may have a limited training budget, there are lots of things you can do for free. For example both The Legal 500 (Legalease) and Chambers and Partners hold regular webinars that provide valuable advice on the submissions process. 👍 Be prepared - a PR crisis can happen to anyone so get prepared! Review your crisis comms plan and if you haven't got one, now is the time to engage more widely with the stakeholders in your firm and put one together. 🕰 Set targets - setting simple targets like arranging coffee once a month with a new reporter or aiming for a certain number of press articles for a certain practice area will help things move in the right direction. It's not a big surprise (though smart) OpenAI is investing in its comms function. It's more or less business critical. Here's why: 1️⃣ Nascency: Despite hype, mainstream awareness for even the biggest genAI co's is surprisingly low. Confusion abounds. Tech use is inconsistent. 2️⃣ FUD: Perceptions around AI's impact are super mixed. 3️⃣ Volatility: News coverage (and resulting opinions) is all over the place.
