 In his book “Working with Emotional Intelligence” Daniel Goleman has this to say; “Emotional intelligence does not mean merely “being nice”. At a strategic moment it may demand not “being nice”, but rather, for example, bluntly confronting someone with an uncomfortable truth they’ve been avoiding.” This is easier said than done!! In my view, many people mistakenly equate leadership with authority. Holding a title, wearing a uniform, or wielding power over others doesn't define true leadership. Similarly, being the most forceful, energetic, or charismatic individual in the room doesn't make you a leader. Leadership, as I see it, is rooted in the ongoing realization that you're constantly influencing those around you. The quality of that influence, and how responsibly you wield it, shapes the type of leader you become. You're already leading, whether you acknowledge it or not, simply by virtue of your impact on others. Most of us don't need leadership skills training at first. We need transformational training or coaching to "own" our natural courage, confidence and power. Then everything falls into place.

I recently volunteered as an assistant coach for recreational youth soccer in AYSO region 1046. Here's what I learned after our first game.  1. Every player performs differently. Some players need more coaching while others only need encouragement. It is critical as a coach & leader to identify the needs of each player. 2. Be aggressive. Face the challenge. Attack the conflict. Do not sit back and wait for the conflict to reach you. Move forward and face the problem. Sometimes you will win and other times you will lose. The leadership principles used in sport are no different than those used in business. Even if your players are 7 years old, the fundamentals of sport and business leadership are the same. I look forward to helping develop these children into athletes, men and most importantly, leaders.
