We're delighted to share a summary of our recent K.I.S.S Formulations event from our Personal Care Group chair Nick Dixon. "KISS Formulations took the idea of simplifying formulations for a simple pitch to consumers and looked at the complexity of doing this! We started with current and future trends as the pandemic has changed what consumers look for in products and coupled this with regulatory drivers as reasons that many ingredients may need to be changed. We learned that while a simple skincare product can be done, it may not be enough to stand out and be seen to give value to the consumer and we explored ways to add value without creating long INCI lists. Fragrance allergen regulations also mean more ingredients are required to be listed making products look more complex. Moving onto shampoos, while sulfates may be under pressure from labelling and impurities, replacing them requires combinations of surfactants to give a similar effect, so all is not straightforward. The formula once you have it requires making and we found that cold processing, quick mixing ingredients could be the ones giving the formulator simplicity in the factory, coupled with simplifying the packaging. This was rounded off with looking at claim support and maximising what benefits could be taken from showing conditioning for hair and moisturising for skin. Finally we had a lively discussion on how complicated simplicity can be and this carried on into the car park as people left for home."
