Kicking off London Climate Action Week with some reasons to be optimistic - highlights from We Mean Business Coalition’s #mission2025: Some still want us to believe that the transformation is stalling. We know that it is happening, often faster than we think. Progress towards a 1.5-aligned economy is underway – the technology is in place, investment is scaling, business appetite is rife, and public support is building: 💥The core technologies of the energy transition have already reached tipping points, beyond which fossil fuel alternatives aren’t viable. Wind and solar are meeting over 90% of global power demand growth. 🚙 Electric vehicles now make up 18% of global passenger vehicle sales and as much as 20% and 40% of sales in Europe and China respectively. 💰💚 The world now invests twice as much in clean tech as it does in fossil fuels. 📈 55 of the world’s leading multinationals with combined annual revenues of over $4.4 trillion have published transition plans, in line with TCFD. 🏙️ Almost all 100 members of the C40 cities network have climate action plans which are aligned with the Paris Agreement, taking courageous steps to reduce fossil fuel use, increase community resilience and putting in practice a just transition. 75% of C40 cities are slashing per capita emissions faster than their respective national governments. 🗳️ 77% of global citizens want their governments to act urgently on climate.

#Mission2025 What a breath of fresh air and optimism. Because when you are in the U bend, it feels important to remind yourself that the vast majority of human beings want to thrive on a healthy planet, rather than live through ever intensifying climate change consequences for their livelihoods, their peace and security, and ultimately their children’s health and happiness. There are so many human and business reasons just to get on with it!

It's time for leaders to lead. Recent analysis from the Energy Transitions Commission shows that existing commitments in countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) can comfortably be at least THREE times more ambitious than existing versions. #Mission2025 demands that governments raise their ambition and commitments to secure a liveable future for all of us. With major players from business, finance, science and culture joining forces on this decade-defining mission, it is possible and the time to tip the balance is now.

It’s time to have the post COP28 discussion. I think we as Africans will have to localize the global discussion that was held in Dubai such that we become part of community service to keep our communities clean. We need to start with the basic; “we haven’t take care of our environment enough and focusing mainly on fossil fuel is a high jump”. What’s our localized climate friendly alternatives for fossil fuel? Let’s pick the low hanging fruits first (Clean and plant greens) with the long term plans to transition into clean energy. Let’s find out what city like Kigali (Rwanda) is doing about waste management that made them the cleanest city in Africa. According to my sister Weyinmi Erikowa-Orighoye It’s time to Africaness the word Climate Change so it can have context for our people. Action Action Action.
