It's my birthday today. So, yes, this is a sappy reflective post. My gifts over the weekend included: A friend flying in from PHX to surprise me, a surprise party with close friends, cracking open some nice bottles of wine, and more gray hairs. Last week, I started a "Weekly Wins" document. This document serves a few purposes...mainly to keep track of achievements so prepping for quarterly checkins with my boss easier...but also something I'm trying to do a better job of this year...and that's practicing gratitude. I went through a few months' worth of notes to backfill the document. And then I lost track of time and stayed curious. I kept going, looking at older related notes and journals from years ago. It was fun reminiscing and looking back on all the things I and teams I was a part of accomplished. The last note I found was authored when I was still in college. It was a list of personal & professional dreams I wanted to achieve when I was older. Wow, did that come with a lot of feels. Mostly ones of gratitude, as I've achieved a lot of what was listed. There's others I'm still working on and others that probably won't happen but I'll keep dreaming for. In one of the reality TV shows I watch, the host obtains a childhood photo of each contestant, holds it up, and asks the contestant what they would tell their younger self. And oohf...queue the waterworks! From contestants and viewers alike. When's the last time you stopped and looked back on how far you've come? This year? The last 5? The last 10? The last 20? Since graduating college? Since you were a kid? I don't know about you all but I need to pause, reflect, and do this more often. Between the "go, go, go!" at work, personal & professional happenings over the past year that were NOT on my 2024 bingo card (new job, replacing my house's air conditioning, losing both our dogs, etc), and the state of the world, it's easy to get too tied up in the moment or focus too much on the wrong things. I'd bet your younger self would be so proud of how far you've come. Keep going. And have gratitude. For the journey, and for all the people & lessons along the way. ...and start your 'Weekly Wins' doc so your performance checkins are easier and you have receipts when fighting for that promotion!
